Dumaguete needs much improved infrastructure long before they need another mall.
You know those funny little bumpy pot hole ridden things called roads.
A bypass road around town, wider roads, parking places.
And tear down some of the dumps downtown and put in parking lots and places. And more green areas for parks. Just a thought.
Maybe even things like stops lights, stop signs, street signs (names), and too many other things to list here without boring you.
Here's a thought. Maybe, just maybe teach people how to properly drive, perhaps even require lessons by a "qualified" instructor before one is allowed to get their first driving license.
    And the list goes on.
One of the great things about Dumaguete is there is plenty of room for improvement. No fear of running out of things to do and fix.
    Have a great day.

Its the Philippines, your in the wrong country if you want motorists who know how to drive properly hehe. But before fixing things need more money from bigger business which a solid mall can help bring. Dumaguete needs a solid business spurt from another competitor major mall like ayala or SM. But also before start fixing things like roads need to fix the issues that cause them which sadly isn't going to happen until Dumaguete grows beyond the small city style it currently is. They need some major motivation change how things operate. Before roads get fixed they need to look at getting rid of the passenger motorcycles which is NOT going to be easy w/o major expansion. Filipino's so strongly resist change it seems.

    Totally agree with ChMacQueen.
I feel however that the residents of Dumaguete seem to think that the city is much bigger than it actually is.
I live near Bacolod & tend to do my shopping there, It is quite a large city & is reasonably equipped with 5+ large malls at the last count, which do well.
However when I visit Dumaguete Nice though it is { which is part of its charm } It is still just a large town / Small city.
& therefore doesn't have the consumer base or indeed the room in the city to build another large mall.
Not knocking Dumaguete but that's the way it looks to me...

Personally I prefer Dumaguete to stay small and even smaller would be nice. We have Robinsons and Lee Plaza plus all the local stores. If that isn't enough then I think someone is in the wrong city. They should look at Cebu, Bacolod, or Manila where they have all the malls you'd likely ever want or need.
I like small town life just fine. I have seen the scenario many times in the U.S. where city people move to the country and or small towns and then want to bring all the things with them that were the reason they left where they were in the first place. If it were totally up to me Dumaguete wouldn't even have a Mc'd's.
I prefer quality over quantity in a town. Bigger is not better.
    Just my opinion of course.

Reviving this 5 year old thread after doing a forum search on the topic of malls. This is the closest I could come to being related. Heaven knows I don't want to offend tender sensibilities of some who get upset with a duplicate post on a topic. I know doing that destabilized the entire social infrastructure of the country...possibly the planet.

    This in the Negros Chronicle:

I love the terminology of the opening line: "City braces for...." Braces is right!

I don't think Dumaguete could support them. Vast majority of expats are too cheap to eat there regularly and the locals wouldn't spend that much on food. Those that would eat there regularly are too small in numbers. It would be nice though.
