I suspect that the guard had not been trained in a proper procedure for that situation, and did what he thought best. Better than nothing, but the blame probably rests with the management for not training staff (maybe there is no procedure).

I get the following and the looks also. But unlike you guys, I get this treatment because of my good looks. I just stop and pose for them. If I'm not in a hurry, I might even sign autographs and do selfies.

You just misunderstand the service quality of the staff there. They follow you so that they are immediately ready to serve you.:whistling::wink::roflmao::wacky::laugh:
But I'm not so sure if the opposite is better: In Switzerland most time in a shop you find no shop staff except the busy cashier to ask, where something is. And the cashier can not get away from the cash register to help you.:grumpy::yuck::rage::mad:

I think those who are the most honest probably resent this the most - because of the pride in maintaining one's own standards without the need for external influence.

I am of mixed opinion on this. It seems obvious that the customer service staff get a credit or commision of some kind as they always get the cashier to note their employee ID on the receipt. So in City Hardware they all stand around the cash register and accost me just before I pay, to get their name on the bill. In Triumph Home Depot they stand at the entrance and accost me immediately upon my arrival. The first is no use when trying to get help as they are only interested in getting their name on the bill. The second try to rush me through my purchases so they can get back to the entrance and grab the next customer. I am used to it now. In City Hardware I come to the front and grab an employee and then force him to come help me if needed. In Triumph, I tell them, with a grumpy tone, that I prefer to take my time and shop by myself. The third time telling them this they usually listen.

I believe some stores may pay them commission (or pay them solely by commission). I have noticed that at some of the larger stores they write the employees ID number down when they follow you to the cash register. This is either to make sure they are actually doing their jobs or to make sure they get their commission...or a bit of both.

Personally, I don't care that they follow me around. If I do start to get annoyed I will ask them if they can help me find an item I know doesn't exist is or something that will force them to go to the back and check the, almost certainly out of stock, inventory for larger sizes. It'll keep them busy while I grab what I'm really there for. I will try to wait until they come back so they can follow me to the register and give their number to cashier.

Intersting! I went to Rejoice Hardware one time in flipflops, shorts and t-shirt. I know some look awesome with this outfit but I might just have looked like trying to pass the time pretending to look around. I had a long list of things to buy for two bathrooms. I was checking a toilet bowl and I needed the staff’s opinion but she didn’t seem interested so I went to the counter/cash register where a Chinese lady was almost done with one customer and gave her my list. She was immediately running around getting my stuff. And then the staff that kind of brushed me off before approached with a broad smile and tried to ask what I needed but I told her in a cold tone that it’s been taken cared of. Funny that the Chinese lady didn’t ask for her help.

Thanks for the tip. I will never shop at Lee Plaza. That is quite illegal and should not be tolerated even for 30 seconds. What is the guard going to do? Shoot you because you leave? However, being the Philippines I would not be surprised if the guard did shoot someone who refused to obey. I cannot believe they are well trained to act in such situations. Most stores in the Philippines you just have to show a receipt and the guard checks off and you are free to pass.
