[IMG]Traffic lights in Dgte soon. Members of the Dumaguete City Bids and Awards Committee meets Lapu Lapu City Vice-Mayor Marcial A. Ycong (left) as he shows them the inside of the traffic and CCTV monitoring center. The CBAC members led by City Legal Officer Doram Dumalagan (4th from right) visited not only Lapu-Lapu City but also Minglanilla and Cebu City as part of the study so they can recommend the most appropriate traffic light system for this city. CBAC members include (left-right) Gilbert Ablong of Traffic Management Office, City Assessor Rowell Balbon, City Planning and Development Coordinator Leonides Caro, General Services Officer Azucena Gonzales, City Budget Officer Antonieta General and Atty. Conrad Concepcion.

With the CCTV project now ready for implementation within the next 9 months or earlier, the city government will next install traffic light system in major street intersections of Dumaguete City.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo recently directed members of the Bids and Awards Committee and Technical Working Group to conduct a study tour in Cebu City, Minglanilla and Lapu- Lapu City so they can make a recommendation which traffic light system will be most suitable and appropriate for the city.

The installation of traffic lights system is the next big project of Mayor Remollo to manage the traffic in the Central Business District and to ensure that enforcers will focus more on penalizing than actually manning traffic.

Based on initial estimates, the city will need at least P 16 million to install traffic lights in four major intersections that are incidentally part of national highways.

But these are still conservative estimates and Mayor Remollo is willing to cover as many major intersections of the city as recommended that the budget will allow.

The CCTV system will complement the traffic light system to help record the incidents of violations and identify the offenders. Citation tickets may be sent online or be reflected in the fees to be paid when the transact business in the city hall.

And as soon as the clamping and towing ordinance will be implemented through a private company, the traffic situation in the city’s center is expected to be more manageable, orderly and less congested.

If both CCTV and the traffic lights systems will be up and working, Mayor Remollo shall implement a no contact policy in the apprehension of violators of traffic rules to avoid enforcers from being seduced to accept bribes.

So the question is which intersection do you think needs the traffic lights ?????????

Sent to who? There are huge numbers of people driving vehicles with "open bills of sale" such that the vehicle could easily be registered to someone who died years ago.

Since the ones who run the lights will be the lawbreakers then this is the crowd you have to catch. You won't catch them with this system. They will laugh at it and be happy the lights are holding up all the law-abiding drivers for them.

Best way to collect the traffic tickets is when the yearly CR has to be paid at the LTO but if they won't cooperate with the city then the whole system is doomed to fail.

My question is how many penalties (tickets) will they need to issue to cover P 16 Million?

Since it is the national highway would the taxes collected from fuel go towards paying these lights off? I thought those taxes were supposed to go towards building and maintaining infrastructure.

Did the article mention anything about citations going towards paying off or maintaining the lights?

Fairly laughable until they start putting some PNP on the road with fast (and fueled motorcycles) to chase people down and authority to run them off the road not giving a sh*t what happened to said runner. Tons without registrations or valid plates and then how about the simple fact the owner may not be the driver (like said maybe owner is years dead). What are they really going to do? Checkpoints are a joke because everyone knows how to avoid them and that they won't ever leave the checkpoint to chase someone and they won't shoot either.

If this comes about in my lifetime I would hope they put enforcers at these lights. My experiences with traffic lights in Bacolod, is when it turns red you can count at least 4 - 5 cars still going through the light. If you plan on stopping look in your rearview because the person behind might have another idea in mind. I know about yellow, speed up to beat the red. But I have actually seen people at least 50 meters or more away speed up when the light turns red so they don't have to stop. Just because you have a green light, proceed with caution. If the enforcers really stop these terrible drivers and hit them in the pocket book, then maybe they will learn to behave. But, since a general attitude of drivers seems to be, the law applies to everyone else, not me, I doubt this will help, it will probably lead to more accidents.
