Good day, and Happy Holidays to all... my gal and I are arriving in Dumaguete on 26DEC to scout out the area and hopefully make it a regular stop and possible residence. This forum has been a gold mine and I am very thankful for the very active membership. Can anyone please tell me whether there are any periodic ex-pat gatherings of note in the city, particularly over the next couple of weeks - when/where? I would look forward to meeting some potential neighbors. Thanks. Ken

Welcome to Dumaguete to you and your lady Ken.

Helps to tell a bit about yourself, nationality, how long in Philippines etc

I'm a British born Aussie, lived in Cebu City for many years before choosing the city of gentle souls. Great bunch of expats here.

There a number of different expat groups that meet up here... most are taking a break over Christmas and New Year.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
I am an American, working in the merchant marine - planning to retire before 2030. My gal's family is from near Argao, Cebu. Dumaguete seems to be an excellent distance from S Cebu!
We plan to spend a couple of nights in the city, then venture down to the Dauin area, and then other N.O. destinations yet TBD. I have been in the PI on/off for about 10 years now; many of those visits were work-related. We are homestead-minded at the present time.
If any details arise on those groups, please let me know - we'll be in N.O until around the 10th.
    thanks...

Very similar to my own Philippine time line Ken and work brought me here too.

You'll like Dumaguete I reckon or even better check out Valencia 20min drive up to the mountains behind Duma.. cooler lower humidity and cleaner air!

Enjoy and will keep you posted.

    Cheers

Welcome. Check out Bacong when you come, a nice “Suburb” of Dumaguete. There are many different groups of foreigner gatherings in the area. Golf crowds, card playing crowds, coffee crowds at McDonalds and Sans Rival, AA crowds, refreshment drinking crowds in Valencia and the boulevard in Dumaguete, and others. Most restaurants here are average (being kind) with a few hard-to-find nuggets. Most of the beef here requires very sharp teeth. Still, many of us are extremely happy (to be above ground).

Get out while you still enjoy the country. There are better places to settle down.
To name a few; Iloilo (Panay) or even Calapan (Mindoro).
Hell, even Tacloban (Leyte) or Legazpi (Luzon) is more fun and liveable than Dumaguete.
Don't follow the others to Bacong, Valencia or Dauin or whatever, you still have to deal with Dumaguete a few times a week. So that's no escape/solution.

I am in Dumaguete, I rent a place near the Hypermart.
Been there for about a year. And it's ok-ish. But if you think that living in or near this heap of trash and filth called Dumaguete is acceptable, enjoy. I think it's ridiculous and unhealthy. And anyone considering living in this area should re-consider.

Look at any random street corner, empty lot, or any drain canal and you'll see trash, dirt, sewage, dead animals, rats & bugs, and the stench that comes with it is almost unbearable too. Not to mention the typical filipino crap that seems to be the norm in this country.

I don't care how nice your house and little bubble you live in is. As soon as you step out, the overall quality of life is appalling.

The trash thing is something of the last few months. It's beyond filthy.

I'm leaving soon. Never coming back.

Hope you find a place where you are happy. Sacrifices definately have to be made living here. If one can rise above that and live out of town it can be comfortable for some of us.
