Couple new in Dumaguete

Good day everyone,

We're couple who have decided to stay for 3 months here in Dumaguete. We're thinking about either buying a second hand motorbike or just rent one.

What do you think is the best thing to do? thanks in advance.

Manual or automatic as long as it's well maintained and with reasonable rates.. Thanks

 

I agree with DavyL200 that you should rent - the reason being that selling here can be a hassle and you might have to start that process way before you leave. If you sell quickly then you have no bike - if you cannot sell by the time you leave then you don't have the money. And they tend here to drive prices down - you could lose 10 to 15k on your purchase price and for 3 months also be responsible for repairs.

RENT
The last time I rented a 125 it cost me ₱2000.oo for a month and that was less than a year ago. Refuse to rent junk, everything must be working. So rent it and make sure you check it out and take photos or video that way you cannot be blame for scratches done before you rented it. I have never had those kinds of problems here in Dumaguete but did have that pulled on me in Vietnam and I learned an expensive lesson.

 

I guess it would be a challenge to buy a scooter for 12.000 that still deserves to be called a scooter.
Second hand cars or bikes are extremely expensive in the Philippines. Not sure whether you can find a reliable one for a 3 months vacation where you just want to cruise around and not facing trouble every given day.

By the way, I am not sure if you can buy a scooter as a tourist at all. You don’t have a residence, so how you want to deal with registration, insurance and stuff ?
