How to start business in Dumaguete?

Thank you very much for your advice. It confirms my online research.

There is a coworking space there where I can meet freelancers and get to know the tech community. Now I just need to find a place to live within walking distance. I have seen the traffic in Dumaguete and issues with parking. I would rather not have to depend on commuting on a motorcycle. So this leaves me to find a place within walking distance.

Do you know of any apartments nearby?

 

Well maybe a boots on the ground is called for here, maybe a month at Harolds mansion would suit until you ca get around, The are at the far end of Hibbard Avenue over the crossing on the right and is about a 15/20 min walk.
NB Hibbard Avenue is the Road through Silliman that is where the Portals are Situated

 

I'm a freelancer myself. I don't interact with the tech community much though. I know a handful of tech guys here.

I'm a walker as well. I walk everywhere. You can reach much of the city in a 30 minute walk. Almost everywhere within an hour. If you don't want to walk or drive, then you can get a pedicab.

I haven't been on the lookout for apartments, so I can't be much help there. I do believe there are apartments on Hibbard Ave though. Maybe start at Harold's Mansion and walk towards Silliman beach (the direction which is opposite from downtown.) There is one place there I believe which is advertising apartments (looks to be a narrow 5 story building.) I just don't quite remember what it's next to. I'll take a look next time I go by there.

There are a couple more co-working spaces other than in Silliman. I have heard the other places are better. I think the place in Silliman doesn't have air conditioning. I haven't been to any of them, I only heard from freelancer friends who have come through town. Maybe post back reviews when you find them. Maybe I'll check them out also.

If you want to be close to the city and in a cool part of it i advise you to look around piapi, i lived there for 1 year it was great and it's developing fast (restaurants, condo etc ).
You can get a bike as well but i would not advise it in this traffic haha!

 

In 2007 I was transferred to Manila from Singapore so the company (IBM) pre-arranged 9G work visas for my ex-wife and I (my wife was not allowed to work).
My work was consulting and project management running the company’s internal outsourcing in Manila and India.
I was paid from the US and the US and the company settled with the Philippines for my housing and taxes.
To justify the work permit I had to show transcripts from my computer science degree and years of experience to show the required expertise wasn’t available in the Philippines.

Do you remember if you had an Alien Employment Permit ("AEP")? Maybe IBM handled this without your direct knowledge?

 

Perhaps my company handled that. I submitted required docs to my company and they processed.
