Anyone ever used Trivago, hotel search app? What if a similar application would do the same except it gives you information on prices, whereabouts, brand and availability of items instead? Does that sound, interesting and wanted especially if you're constantly soliciting for items in hardware shops around the locality? Please share your thoughts on this one. I'd like to hear your critique on the creation of this app. Thanks!

Thank you for your feedback. I just moved to Dumaguete and just recently found out we have an online community. Good to see people here are actually active or responsive!

Trivago Just like Agoda are nothing but hype. Yes I did try them. No they are not going to save you any pesos. All of those "save you money" sites have to make money or they go bankrupt. They have to get their money from YOU! The way to use them is in planing your trip with their site's travel info. Than go to the Hotel's or Airline's site and buy directly from them.
Yes I think this tread smell a lot like spam.

Slightly off topic, but my experience with discount travel sites is usually the opposite. And I do check prices at the primary's site before I book.

To give an up-to-date result on the availability of items "around the locality" (do you mean within Dumaguete?) all the places selling items would have to be linked to the internet and have a constant update on stock levels. Plus, are you intending people then buy online OR go there? (By which time it may be out of stock). I think you are about 50 years too soon.

The kind that shady companies use to promote their apps and websites? It was a pretty random post from a user. Looks like it wasn't actually spam though.

    You mean... Lazada?

What are you trying to accomplish with such an app? Make money? I doubt this is something you would gain traction with through your own bootstrapped efforts. Every player in this space has been well funded, massive scale growth and a fast growing head-count of people to build and market it.

Hobby? We have lots of resources for the local region. Too many. All of them could disappear and I wouldn't notice. The DI forums is the only resource I use regularly. Facebook isn't regional, but it does everything you need. Note that Facebook offers free (access even without a data plan) access.

If you want to code something useful as a hobby, there's a massive need for open-source developers / maintainers to jump on projects which are dead or struggling.

If you want to make money, the last item on my own list would be an app to serve the local region. There are much more useful possibilities. Dig deeper. Get creative. Every person who thinks to build an app or website is going to think about something to do with making things for the local community. Just as every Filipino's first business idea is going to be a Sari-Sari store or eatery. Or every non-technical foreigner wants to start a restaurant or bar.
