Absolutely, the women and children in the villages were recruited by the VC. Sometimes they would fool the US troops by acting innocent. It was relatively common and eventually became almost impossible to know friend from foe. The villagers didn’t have much choice in the matter. But US troops didn’t make it a policy to harm civilians with the exception of a few officers who were later exposed and court martialed. On several occasions US troops were blown up by “innocent” villagers and perhaps you know that already. Same thing happened in Iraq but much worse, where kids were strapped with suicide vests.

Also the US “turned tuck tail in defeat” due to USA public opinion fed by media propaganda making the public believe that setting kids on fire was a common occurrence. They are protected by freedom of speech and that can never change, just as we know they are largely fake news today but we don’t attempt to end the media propaganda war on Trump. Public opinion demanded an end to the war and it ended, being the Democracy that we are. The US could have won handily in theory but in the scheme of things it really wasn’t practical to use the force it would have required. It wasn’t worth the massive casualties.
