You are more than right. But I gave up long time ago. Years ago I went to Du Ek Sam Honda dealership. There were 5 Ladies sitting there playing on their cellphones So told them that I wanted to buy a Honda 250CRF. OK, here we go: Out of stock, Sir. But I want to buy one, can you order this motorbike for me ? No, out of stock. And that was it. I asked a second time, then I left. Because knowing the Philippines it is useless to argue in such situations. Best advice, buy from a Filipino/Chinese. These sales people normally don't have the word 'out of stock' in their vocabulary. There is only: We don't have it at the moment, but we will order it you.

Most of the expat complaints here are along the lines of, expectations of western business practices even though you aren't in the west.

Nobody should come to PI expecting to change the culture. You are a vistor, you don't play by western rules, you play by PI rules. If you don't like it, then leave. Simple as that.

You sound to me a bit overly understanding for our host country. Criticize our host country doesn't mean we have to walk around like dogs with their tail between the legs. Of course we have to adapt and I think most of us do. Foreigners in our home country do also complain for various things. And this is ok. As long the criticism is meanigful and constructive you can always learn. That applies also for the Filipinos. So your statement if you don't like it then just leave, seems to be a bit too simple.

Yes I get your point. And yes absolutely, complain all u want but just understand you aren't going to change things by complaining. If you just want to vent that is your right. Personally I complain but I quickly get over it and come to grips with reality. Reality to me is yes there are things that infuriate me about PI, but I still stay because it beats the alternative. And the alternative is always there.. Waiting with open arms lol

I bought a zipped man-bag in Dumaguete, but not from one of the large stores, and the zip went within days. They were not willing to repair it or replace it until I persuaded the owner of the benefits of good customer service bringing in repeat business. Originally she told me "This is the Philippines" (A fact I already knew because @TheDude had already informed me  ) but she seemed, by gentle persuasion (no horse's head used), to think more Western.

You know in America, Americans always say, "You're in America, learn English!" to foreigners when they hear them speaking their native tongue.

At least they don't do that to expats in PI

True - and often I say to the Filipinos I am communicating with that if they do not understand me then it is my fault as it is my responsibility to learn their language.

A humble expat.. who knew they existed? lol.

One of the first lessons I learned when I got to PI is, to speak SLOW.
I even try to speak with a pinoy accent to help them understand..

Humble is a form of respect.

Good point about speaking slow - it took me a few totally puzzled faces when I first came here to realise.

I went to Germany and spoke English in a German accent - I think they did not appreciate it

Why would they do that? English is an official language here. Most of the road signs are in English. The campus at Foundation Elementary has signs asking the student to speak in English. I would bet that most of the locals can speak better English than they can speak Tagalog (I know this to be true of those I have been close with but I can't be sure about the majority in the city.)
