That Lantaw always screwed up our order, since its got bigger it's got worse, just cant be bothered with the place now, it becomes a hassle when you question the order and what's lacking.

Bacong public Elementary School starts teaching English in grade 3, all other classes in the mother tongue. Don Bosco teaches all classes in English from pre school on with Visayan and Tagalog classes starting in Grade 1.

Guess it depends one what region. My inlaws are from the mountains on Negros. They speak Bisaya and a little English and have trouble with Tagalog.

Because tagalog is taught in school just like english. My father in law never went past elementary school and he knows about 10 words of English.

I think everyone just needs to stop speaking in absolutes.

Can a Filipino not go to school and speak English? Yes, they can. It is possible to teach yourself a language.

Can a Filipino not be able to speak Filipino? Yes, it is possible, but unlikely. (The national language is Filipino, not Tagalog.)

Enough of the anecdotal stuff. It doesn't prove anyone's point.

Ah, yes! The classic "I want to speak to your manager" tactic.

    The manager is not here.

The manager is in a meeting.

    The manager is on holiday.

    The manager is in Cebu.

The manager will not be in until 4 pm.

The manager did not come to work today.

    Take your pick.

And, if by a miracle a manager (or someone they say is the manager) shows up, you likely get the same story and if you tell them they could do business a better way, the normal response is the blank stare with an occasional "Yes, sir."

And Filipinos: 1) are resentful of Filipino/Chinese and, 2) wonder why Filipino/Chinese are so successful.

My partner, a native Filipino, who was born, raised, educated (through bachelor degree) in Manila then living in New York since 1990 is prfectly fluent in English and Tagalog. He came to Dumaguete and found the Tagalog here seriously lacking but passable in the same way English is. He said it varied greatly depending on the individual (just as English is.)
