Hi all i am in need of advice.on march 11 va sent a dependents letter which i never received. on may 9 they sent me another letter which i did receive claiming i owe 32k usd to the Va for not updating my dependents. they have taken my full may check and are saying they will take 2700 for 12 months. i have called the debt man and regional office. i have filled out form reduce payment and re added my 3 dependents. i dont see how i owe 32k for anything they wont even give me a break down of why i owe. i am 100 percent for ptsd and have been for few years.I am freaking out here cause i cant survive on 300 usd a month with a 1yr old son and wife. my rent alone is 500. What am i to do? I hope someone can give me some advice or assist me in fixing this?

I called the Manila VA a week ago and they said they sent me a letter in March I still haven’t received. They acknowledged the Philippines post is lousy.
Sure hope you can get that sorted out.

I see a lot of posts here on VA issues.

Is it worth contacting a VA lawyer / consultant in these cases? I imagine you could get some initial consulting for free and then a payment plan as the situation unwinds.

Lesson to be learned. If you have any change in your status advise the agencies, Retired Pay, SSA, VA or whatever immediately.

I still go to the VA once a year for a check up of sorts. While I am there I see Patient Affairs and go over all the data they have on me.

Sounds like you need legal assistance and I wish you luck.

Right, I imagine this situation tripped a switch and a VA consultant could tell you exactly how that happened and exactly what you need to do to fix it.

You don't even necessarily need a lawyer. The VA is a bureaucratic mess and you need someone who knows the system well and knows who to talk to. I imagine there are consultants out there who can fix the situation more effectively than a lawyer. They may even charge as much as a lawyer, but they'll be more intimately familiar with your sort of situation. A consultant knowing the challenges you are going through might be more willing to provide services now which you can pay for later.

I got this idea from an account of someone who hired a consultant to work through the mess of medical care.
