Hangon, I had to refer to google dictionary to differentiate between liberitarian and liberals. They sound similar but you are saying it was alright with the first one, before the second came along.

Libertarianism (from Latin: libertas, meaning "freedom") is a collection of political philosophies and movements that uphold liberty as a core principle. Libertarians seek to maximize political freedom and autonomy, emphasizing freedom of choice, voluntary association, and individual judgment.

    And then:
Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed, and equality before the law.

I see the subtle difference... equality. Such a terrible thing to have forced upon us?

I did not say "protect" them - I said 'control' them. To remove druggies and other, what some would describe as, 'undesirables' from the gene pool means eliminating them before they can procreate. How would you do that? Interview all 13 year olds and predict their outcomes? If we start to decide (or, even worse, if governments decide) who has 'worthy' genes then we are back in the 'Holocaust'. Is that your 'final solution'?

Education is key to preventing abuse and addiction. If you know what drugs/alcohol do to your body when used at excessive levels you are less likely to heavily abuse them. If you don't know the pros and cons you can't weigh them and make an educated choice.

Of course it does. Offering free treatment for substance abuse/addiction is a much better option than prison IMO. (When in a Filipino prison the chances of you using something like Shabu increases greatly since it is very accessible. Guards in the prisons only make sure people don't get in or out, they do not run the inside of the prison. There is a ranking system within the prisons and the "mayor", a high ranking/well connected prisoner usually there for life, calls all the shots and makes sure everyone obeys the rules.) If you educate and treat people they can return to being productive members of society. Sending them to prison only further exposes them to the criminal lifestyle and helps to ensure that they cannot find legitimate work after they have been released.

I was always curious how people knew the intentions of someone who stole from them...especially when the person wasn't caught. It is only speculation that the goods stolen were pawned for buying drugs.

It is much more likely that they were abusing alcohol while committing the crime than using any illicit drugs. Alcohol is the only drug that makes humans more violent as well as lowers inhibitions. The stats below are from the US but I think they would also apply to pretty much any country that allows alcohol consumption:

Demonize illicit drugs all you like, the facts are that the most socially acceptable drug (alcohol) is by far the most harmful to the user and those around them.

Well said, Education and a more robust economy that offers hope to those currently in poverty is the best solution to the drug problem... unfortunately for society this solution requires its leaders to actually give a d*mn ...

My 15 year old daughter knows this without any AA classes. This isn't that complicated. There are many educated drunks. I don't know what defines educated to you, but if it's just knowledge of the ramifications, I think most people get it as kids. Most people chose to do this because in their mind the benefits (escapism from stress, life, problems, peer pressure) are bigger than the consequences. Sometimes it just starts out as fun, but the fun usually wears out. Lastly, there is mental illness, a physical reason. Eventually addiction sets in after using alcohol/drugs as a crutch for the real problem. I would suggest we start there.

Don't kid yourself, in a democratic society leaders are a reflection of the society, the buck stops with all of us. Most people have an innate will to survive (see Maslow's triangle), why would they sit there and beg for a few pesos a day instead of taking the easy way out. If we are going to ignore them, think we all come into this world with the same opportunities and everyone is where they are because they chose to be there, I suggest we walk a mile in their shoes.

Yep, and this is where free mental health and addiction treatment comes in.

There is no single answer to the problem. It is nuanced issue that needs to be approached from several different angles. One thing we definitely know is that locking people up, or threatening to lock them up, doesn't do a d*mn thing.

:meh: He came up with his "theory" by studying the most elite of the elite human specimens (people like Einstein). He refused to take a look at or study the mentally ill or even normal humans because he felt they were genetically inferior. You'll have to excuse me for not taking his Nazi pure-race eugenic inspired rubbish serious. His "theory" (a hypothesis at best) is easy to digest and became popular because of that, but human behavior is anything but simple and logical.

Just a clarification because it can be confusing. In the US the term "liberal" is used differently than it is in much of the world and differently than the way the dictionary defines it. Using the terms as they are defined above, a libertarian is indeed a liberal, however if you here an American use the term liberal they mean someone further along the scale of socialism, most Democrats, "Progressives", Greens, and Socialists are considered liberals, because they favor greater government intervention in economic and social issues. They are called liberals, but they are not liberal. Most conservative in the US are not liberal either, nor are they conservative. It can be pretty confusing.
