Emergency A neg. blood needed in NOPH

Dear members,

a Filipino in Provincial Hospital Dumaguete needs A neg. blood, one bag only. I was asked to donate and had my blood tested there today but unfortunately can not donor this time.
If one of you wants to donate: his name is Vivencio Lastimoso, room 212.

 

I have A neg blood but Id have to check with my doctor if its ok to donate.

 

I just saw this. Would have donated if it was acceptable. I hope it worked out since it is now three weeks later that I saw this. I thought the reason we put our blood type in our profile was for just such emergencies and our willingness to be contacted directly and give blood. I guess not.

 

I witnessed this recently when a family was struggling to acquire 5 bags of blood - I think they were going to use the Red Cross. It would be very useful if a list was available of those who are willing and able to donate blood, because I think the blood group listings on profiles does not equate to that person being available as a donor.

If anyone wishes to leave a message here, or PM me, to state their willingness to donate (or any other sources they know of) I would collate that and create a thread of the names - also adding any further contact details, if they give approval. There can be very little more stressful than to need blood and feel isolated and helpless trying to obtain it.

 

Related question. Does anyone know the list of issues a potential donor might be rejected for. I know age is one. In the US I was rejected one time because I was exposed to the Mad Cow Disease while working in the UK.

 

Although I know nothing on the forums is binding, why would the Dumagueteinfo.com administrators ask for (and publish) members' blood type if not for the possibility of donating? Absent a medical or official requirement, why would anyone volunteer their blood type to be published online in a forum if not as a non-binding offer to donate? Why is there a red placard under my name that reads "Blood Donor"?

 

I see your point and admit I never noticed the red 'Blood Donor' label - But if the system is working then why are people coming onto the forum to request blood? It means either they have no means to contact those with the required blood type or those people do not respond. I note for example that a member asked for A- blood and you are an A- donor, but clearly you were not contacted and knew only because you read the request on this thread three weeks later.

If those, such as @DavyL200 and @Solid_Pan, who out of kindness make requests here for donors could explain why it is not possible/easy to obtain donors direct via the PM system, it would help me better understand what is happening.

I was a donor in Australia my whole life (which meant every 3 months I would get a reminder and drop in for about 10 minutes at the Red Cross and for them to draw and give me something to eat and drink) - about 1995 (I think) I got a letter in the mail from the Red Cross thanking me for the past donations but asking me not to donate on account that I had lived in London 1981 and 1982 (as a lot of Ausies used to do back then) and because I was a meat eater could have contracted Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease - Mad Cow Disease.
Last year I was walking past a collection centre in Sydney and walked in to see if, almost 40 years on, whether they were accepting we Mad Cows - and the answer was a resounding No. So, at least there we are banned. I agree. There should be a better way. I'm not sure what the motivation of the developers of the forum about blood type were at the time the site was established. When I saw the question, I assumed the reason was for notifying people who are blood donors when an emergency exists. If that was it, I guess it fell by the wayside over the years.

 

The restrictions make sense when there is appropriate blood (or donors) available in an emergency. Personally, if it came to life or death if I don't get the moderately rare blood type I need, I think I would want to take the chance on a donor who MAY have been exposed to Mad Cow in 1982 (and is still alive to tell about it) rather than definitely die from lack of an available transfusion.
