Philippines is fast becoming China’s colony. They’re about to cancel visiting foreign troops agreement and MDT (Mutual Defense Treaty). Duterte is going under Chinese influence and Trump calling his bluffs. Philippines isn’t what it used to be 20 years ago. It’s sad.

the chinese are active on both sides of the phils. to the east they have been buying and bribing their way into control of several of the small south pacific nations to complement their heavy handed growing control in the south china sea. if duterte has not been bribed he is an exception to what is going on elsewhere in the neighborhood.

This has been going on for years and people here didn't do anything about it. The big distribution company's here made windfall profits selling poor quality junk, everything from clothing to consumer goods and food to building and construction materials...But now due to the virus things aren't coming from China. I have asked the question to many of my local friends and we all know the local attitude, only think about today and not about tomorrow, but "Tomorrow" prices on everything are going to start increasing as warehouse stocks are going to be hoarded and common goods are going to be in short supply..and we all know whose fault that is going to be.. IMHO...

The nine dashed line map shows how close the Chinese consider the border to be with the Philippines. In Palawan at the beach on the West side, once you step in the water you are already in China lol. Nearly the same situation in western Luzon. When orders for world globes are given to Chinese companies from companies in other countries and unless otherwise specified, the nine dashed line version of the China map will be used. I wonder how many elementary and high school classrooms have newer versions of globes indicating this? Likely, nobody cares.

With Duterte being a Chinese puppet, worse things are going to come. Philippines is becoming china’s little B*tch. He is rewarding all his buddies with government contracts, canceling tv franchises and giving to his Chinese friends and moving ever close to China.

It is a bit hard to see but it is there. This is from an article stating that a Vietnam was refusing to stamp passports with this illustration.

China has invaded Philippines economy from small hardware stores to large corporations. All hardware stores and construction companies in visayas are owned by Chinese. This is totally different from 20 years ago. Children’s textbooks are glorifying China and denigrating US policies. Duterte is bad news for US and ex-pats here in the Philippines. Things are changing fast. Twenty years ago US citizens were welcomed and loved. Now, not so much. Loyalty to China is taking root in philippines and its culture thanks to a corrupt and criminal president.

As an expat I personally don’t care about the US Phils politics but also detect some anti American hatred that was never here before. I recently experienced that from some brainwashed nationalist millennial at NIAA while I was on the way home to the USA (I mistakenly bumped him while standing in line with my luggage cart and he came back at me screaming “I’m a Filipino!”), I think he was saying that because he was Filipino and I had no more right to be there than him, as if I were asserting power or something. It was just a mistake. That I think is what you are talking about. However, after that, several Filipinos actually apologized to me for that behavior, something I thought was unnecessary. What people forget is that the migration runs 2 ways, with vastly more Filipino immigrants in the US (4.5 million) than US expats in the Philippines (a few hundred k if that). What they forget is that a large percent of the 4.5 million in the US send remittances back to the Phils, providing valuable foreign exchange over the secondary currency here (something the China RMB cannot do). They forget that expats, rather than taking from society here actually spend their money here; we do not send Pesos back home. They may have forgotten that after the US bases here were invited to leave, the US retaliated...as they always do in diplomatic circles to even the playing field...held up H1B visas for Philippine professionals (nurses and doctors) for about 4 years and closed the Cebu consulate permanently, although now a small part time new office was recently reopened there. If the VFA goes through, Trump May say he doesn’t care but he is not known to be timid when supposed allies disrespect our country. There will be a strong diplomatic response. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out; my only problem with the VFA departing is that, for sure, the terrorist groups will be emboldened and will be able to move much more freely around the country when they are no longer being watched by our military intelligence via military satellites and other resources. The deterrence will be gone and that could be a real problem, we will have to see. If terrorists gain the upper hand, that is when we cut out and other non-Americans westerners may follow that same cue. That is also when the Department of State travel advisories will be issued for Cebu and Luzon and tourism will take a big slide (no ominous visa requirements required to crater the USA tourism). But we should wait and see what happens in the next 180 days.

It seems like a lot of US members are ex-military on the forum. I'm not ex-military, so my impression could be off, but the Philippines seems to have a unique situation around things medical that can't be found in other countries. If the US were to eliminate the medical benefits (tricare) for ex-military in the Philippines would that cause you to leave?
