But I agree, there is far too much unknown about this virus and people need to avoid being scared by every 'twist and turn' reported on (there will be too many for people to cope with) - as well as not being overly positive about cures in the immediate future.

The pandemic is a fact and we have passed through the stage of promoting 'self protection' because if people don't get it by now then they never will (or don't wish to), to the stage of self-preservation in terms of obtaining food supplies. The big picture is out of our hands - that is up to governments and the scientific teams racing to find treatments.

We are really very lucky to be in this country at this time rather than our homelands in most cases. We just have to accept and do the best we can - the Forum once again has proved its value in keeping people informed on all aspects of life in this very unusual time.

 

I am not a doctor, but for my understanding this Corona virus exists for a long time already, and it appears in some varieties. testing has to be very specific because regular tests (will) show that nearly everyone is carrying a kind of this virus, mostly without any consequences or negative health impacts. I think there is a general misunderstanding about this virus, the news are focusing on the dramatic aspects and cause a kind of panic among the people. hence I am not looking forward to the announced mass testing.

 

In fact, here is the cheery news: There are many viruses currently circulating in non-human animals which could pass into the human species and cause something like Covid-19 or worse. IF the current coronavirus came directly from a wild animal in a market then that proves one route. It would also be possible for transmission between hosts (to humans from other animals) naturally in a village somewhere - it may take only one person to be in contact with the wild animal to start it off.

Secondly, there are viruses already existing with the human species which could mutate to become far more dangerous - influenza being a well known example.

The important point is for governments to take this as seriously as a nuclear attack and prepare their citizens for it. If we can have billions worth of nuclear weapons available if required then we need to have stockpiles of face masks in every country in the future - having already done so could have reduced the effect of the virus causing Covid-19 to manageable with no severe economic repercussions. Saving a few billion worldwide is going to cost the world trillions and wreck many people's lives.

Although the same person winning a significant sum in the lottery twice is very rare, it is not unknown. So they need to prepare for the next one as it might be another 100 years (i.e. the 1918 Flu pandemic was about 100 years ago) or more or it might be next week or next year.

My advice to individuals is that once this is over, buy a supply of good quality masks and use them as soon as any new virus arises in the world - they usually enter the body via the mouth, nose or eyes. If you never use them then care not about the 'wasted' cost but be thankful they were never needed.

From all the reading this 76 yr old has done, it appears that "transmission by contact" is at least equal to or more than breathing airborne stuff. There was an amazing Israeli Health dept (if i remember correctly) video a week or so ago about how the virus spreads by contact, and remember this thing goes exponentially. So be careful what you touch and use hand sanitizer liberally (before touching face)..
