    I have thought the same thing. It is offensive to me. I have traveled all over to many countries and haven't experienced this. I try not to feel offended or paranoid over it but how could I not feel this way?

    I must say that I also have travelled and lived in many places but I have not seen the term in such ubiquitous and casual use in most places elsewhere although Thailand is a good example of where it does. Many people are offended by the thought of publicly differentiating people, especially to their face, by immigration status and think it is rather xenophobic, a trait most of us don’t admire at home though it also exists there too, albeit mostly in places of racially insecure and uneducated quarters.

    Having thought more about it and read the various responses, I think why I feel a bit unsettled by it is because 'foreigner' seems to define who I am here in every aspect of life. I do this because I'm a foreigner, I look like that because I'm a foreigner, I think like that because etc etc.

    I have to say that it's not all negative comment that I've experienced on what foreigners do, some of it is complementary, but it still goes into the same bracket of defining who and what I am.

    Seems to summarize a good portion of expats in the Philippines and Thailand. Can you blame them? Just look at almost any video of a foreigner in the media. Garbage humans.

    It’s the same in Taiwan. You can do charity your entire life, build schools or hospitals, push for Taiwan’s presence in international events etc. without any mention in the media. But oh dear if you pass out drunk somewhere or raise your voice you are guaranteed your 15 minutes of infamy.

    It is unfortunate that the media doesn't show the good that some of the expats do but good news doesn't get views (and ultimately advertiser's money).

    I know there are some expats doing good charitable work in the Philippines and Negros that really helps the poor. Unfortunately, far too many of these people are doing so illegally without getting the proper visa requirements and/or setting up the proper NPO/NGO framework. This also leads to their work being less visible, open to accusations of fraud, waste and abuse and can also lead to arrests and deportations making them appear like criminals/scammers to all but the tiny community they were providing direct help for. (This also limits the amount of help they can provide as people are going to be much more reluctant to donate to these small person programs without any official organization or books being kept.) I understand why many don't; navigating the bureaucracy and legal paperwork can be extremely confusing and time consuming and seeking donations from outside sources along with keeping proper financial records can be a full time job on it's own...but staying legal is essential when you are dealing with money, especially in a country where corruption and greed reigns supreme.

    Apparently a British tourist was whacked in the head by several locals in Siargao. Needed a lot of stitches to close a nasty scalp wound. Local witnesses say it was unprovoked. See anything on that in the media? Not exactly a feel good stories kind of article.

    Well that certainly isn't good news and it doesn't paint the locals in a very flattering light. Probably shouldn't expect something like that to make it to the national news or to start trending on social media.

    As for why something like that happens...local witnesses probably weren't around during any previous transgressions, if there were any. Could have been unprovoked but, from what I have seen/heard over the years of being here, that generally isn't the case.

    Well I don't know about that. On the other hand, something you sometimes hear, and they are always thinking, goes, "He's a foreigner, he can afford it." That's not an assumption that the foreigner is worthless.
