One of the big changes covid-19 has caused is seen and felt in the education sector. DepEd was hard bent in opening classes in spite of the health threat and parents’ protest. To minimize the perceived health risk, DepEd came up with a different method of delivering instruction sans face-to-face interaction: online teaching-learning. Truth is, this methodology is new to both teachers in public and private schools. Teachers used to actual physical interaction with students will have difficulty switching to this new mode of instruction. Result? Poor quality of instruction. Those enrolled in private schools are not getting their money’s worth inasmuch as school fees remain the same or are secretly increased while students do not get to avail of services they are made to pay for like dental fees, intrams fees, misc., laboratory fees , etc It’s practically a rip-off. Wiser parents have made better decisions by enrolling their kids in public schools or making them do homeschool instead of paying for something that translates to nothing in the end.

Public schools aren’t really an option for those kids who don’t know the local language. I heard that their Math classes are even done in Bisaya. I know of several Filipino parents who put their kids in public schools this year only to get that harsh reality check and had to pull out their kids a couple of days after.

    I don't know.
With all the low cost college educated teachers here, parents have the option of forming their own home schools. Use the home schooling curriculum from your home country and hire a local college grad to teach it.

Groups of parents with students in the same grade can get together and pool their resources. This would require collaboration which many find challenging.

According to my information teachers in public schools have a 'nice' salary. It is starting at 20/k monthly - 13 times a year. Teachers in private schools have a much lower salary.

The private schools that import foreign teachers must pay salaries competitive to first world countries.

I imagine that the tuition for one of these schools is about 20K php per month. Parents can pay for a local teacher to individually teach one child using curriculum from their home country for about the same cost.

Two children and the parents are actually saving money by hiring a personal teacher.

They only have to inform the teacher that a student cannot understand the local dialect. It is only a matter of getting your problem out, communicating with the subject teacher who should be doing English translation esp. with a subject like Math I think teachers find it easier to use English in using mathematical terminologies which have no equivalent in Visaya (most often).Anyway, public schools will start classes on Oct.5 yet so there is still plenty of time to raise your concerns to the heads of schools.

We tried to enrol our son into a public school when first arriving in Phils. Would not accept him as we could not provide school achievement records for each and every year from his schooling in UK. There were a couple of gaps. Top and bottom of it was that DepEd needed to be able to put a tick in every box, i.e. one for graduation each year. Anyone who knows about schooling in other countries will know that unlike the Philippines which adopts the US version of graduating or not at the end of each school year, the pupils progress to the next year regardless of their grasp of the previous year's teachings (that's not a right or wrong thing). So, private schooling was the only choice for us from the off, although we most likely would have switched to private anyway on moving to permanent location.

I agree with the view that teachers are getting 'money for old rope' this year. There job is now basically a few short video conferences with the kids, which sound very jolly from what I overhear, and then copying modules and marking. On my last visit to exchange modules at school, I overheard a parent complaining that he was spending far more time assisting his child with the school work than the teachers, so what was he paying for?

If there's one thing out of this for other potential movers to the Philippines to bear in mind, if you have school age kids, make sure you have complete school records, because there is a box to be ticked.

    A most valid suggestion here.

Untrue. It is not “only a matter” of voicing things out. Things aren’t always so simple. Math was conducted in the mother tongue method of teaching and the teacher could not interrupt her lessons to accommodate the needs of one student who could not understand the dialect. The teacher was obligated to teach in Bisaya because the tests were going to be administered in Bisaya. The teacher made the student take a walk outside the classroom to just kill time and that’s how his parents found him.
