Tell me about it. I took a look at my son’s Social Studies book and it’s all about obedience to authority figures (parents, teachers and police) and antiquated notions of what makes a family. Father’s role in a family is to work, mother’s is to clean the house and care for the kids and the children’s role is unquestioning obedience to them. It’s so 1940‘s and just rubbish mind conditioning, if you ask me.

This is not a rebuff to your posting but something I find interesting to think about: Is it that with mum at home and kids being obedient, the World was a better place?

In a way, it is good because we have law-abiding citizens but on the other hand, it perpetuates complacency, subservience, & often blind obedience.

Not so for me. My mother worked in a factory making tin cans after the war and I was the one who came home from school to an empty house, cleaned out the hearth, made and lit the fire and pealed the potatoes and put them on the gas so they were ready when she came home from the factory. I was 6 and thought nothing of it. Just something I had to do before I could go out and play before dinner time.

World becomes a better place when the women take their rightful place in leadership roles and the little boys stay at home and mind the kids.

I find there are many positives with the way that kids are brought up to 'respect'. However, yes, this blind acceptance of any 'bull' that's thrown at them by figures on authority is so frustrating. I try to discuss with the wife at times and she understands my view, but in the end I just get the stock answer 'that's the way it is here'. She's lived overseas for 10 years so she's seen the other side of things, but has just dropped seamlessly back into local ways in that respect. I can't seem to get through that complaining and giving your views to those who should know better is the best way to improve government, services etc. It's like they really don't care much. Difficult to align with that mindset when you have been brought up to challenge.

Is this thread an attempt at foreign expats exploring the concept of women’s rights in the Philippines? Really?

Suggest we just enjoy our stay here and let the people handle their own cultural affairs. Clue: They will not change what feels natural to them, for us.

I agree. People here are stubborn when it comes to changing traditions/culture. Even education does very little here. But there is always hope that things could get better one of these days. People never stop praying for this.
