    Exactly, I think so. I love the people here and would love nothing more than to see their lives improved through better services etc, but they just seem to think that what they are given must be the best there is and why waste time complaining.

    Work on the reading comprehension skills. Reviews, when done in a respectful and informative matter (which most are) would not qualify as defamation.

    It is not what you say but how you say it.

    Not only in the Philippines is defamation a punishable offence: Just read in a (Dutch) newspaper that an American expat in Thailand had written a negative review on Trip Advisor about a local resort and the owner filed a case against him. Police arrested the man and released him later after paying a bond. If convicted, he could face jail time.

    Hmmm....this would mean that Trip Advisor should stop accepting reviews of Thailand resorts for the protection of its Customers. At a minimum, they should disguise their reviewers’ identity and certainly not cooperate with authorities in identifying the reviewer (I would assume Trip Advisor would never do that). Released from jail after bailing out for what...writing a negative review on Trip Advisor. It just goes to show that when you’re in S.E. Asia you ain’t in Kansas anymore!

    There can be a lot of unfair nonsense written on Trip Advisor reviews and a business owner would be justified in defending his/her business against it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but there are extremes.

    Therein lies the problem - asking 'ordinary' people (those without legal knowledge) to write reviews but not say anything an owner could file a case on. Will this put off the negative reviews and they will all be glowing? Not much use if they are.

    I have problems already reading these reviews when one person gives 10 and says the place was brilliant and another gives 1 and says it is a hell-hole (but I do take into account that one negative could just be an *sshole revenging for some minor problem).

    A Koh Chang resort has defended its decision to sue an American resident of Thailand for defamation over a negative review, saying it had tried in vain to negotiate with him but he continued to post comments that were completely untrue.

    The Sea View Resort released a five-page statement on Saturday after news of its legal action against Wesley Barnes attracted widespread attention. The statement was posted on the Twitter account of Richard Barrow, a British expat travel blogger with 167,000 followers.

    Under Thailand’s tough criminal defamation laws, Mr Barnes could face up to two years in prison if found guilty.

    It would seem to me that Mr. Barnes has only himself to thank for his rude behaviour at the resort initially, his persistence in getting his "revenge" through multiple online posts, and the lawsuit now brought against him.
    More interesting (and upsetting) is the other story referred to in the article which describes a journalist having been convicted over nothing worse than describing truthfully the work conditions at a certain company in Thailand.
