Personal accountability for their actions and decisions is foremost. There is no excuse for choosing to be a criminal. Someone who defies law and order does not deserve our sympathy for these offenders are no longer kids. They should know what they are doing and are to be accountable for their actions.

This discussion reminds me of the Death Penalty argument ... lots of people are against it until someone they love is murdered.... it is obvious that the death penalty does not seem to affect the murder rate but then again is it fair to bear the cost of incarcerating for life... also most of those who favor the death penalty would not be able to push the button/pull the lever so what are we to do ??

I eat meat but would be unable to slaughter the animals - except in dire circumstances.

I am pro the death penalty but only for serious crimes of evil - don't ask me what they are as it would be a judgement made in each case. However, for those evil b*stards who do terrible things to people (beheading, burning alive) I would be very happy to sign any document that gives them a very slow and very painful death - but will admit I could not administer it.

i agree with you if we use the definition of justice americans are so proud of (justly), but for the offended "justice" may not be so clean and tidy. many (myself included) would accept the eye for and eye outcome as "just" in many circumstances. karma!!

part of the problem in this world is that justice has become so convoluted and the idea that justice delayed is justice denied in so many cases that bypassing the whole mess becomes an easy decision for some.

this is a side bar i guess but you may have see a quote in philstar of the PNP Chief a couple of weeks ago. the quote being, "we're not going to let human rights get in the way of the war on drugs!" a put down of the "system of justice" in the philippines?

in the US there are now more attorneys per capita than doctors (i think i have read) and "justice" is more a matter of dollars and cents than anything. activist judges simply interpret the law as they want it to be. its a major cause of revolutions when the people no longer trust their government and equal rights becomes a fantasy instead of reality.

Yes, if as a country you allow totally fancy damages claims (as in: ones that make the victim or their family rich) to be battled in court (and eventually often awarded), then you shouldn't be surprised when you end up with lawyer offices at every street corner, and insurance policies for personal or professional liability costing a fortune in premiums.

I’d do the shortcut process should someone (God forbid!) do anything evil to any of my family.

Lot of people are for these extrajudicial killings and allowing the victims to determine guilt until it is them being judged.

I don't really have a problem with the death penalty on its own, what I have a problem with is innocent people, who have been falsely convicted (which happens far too frequently), being put to death. There isn't anything less "just" IMO.

Perhaps if all those involved (judge, jury, prosecutors and police officers) in a false convictions that lead to an innocent person being put to death were to face the exact same punishment I would be alright with the death penalty. (I bet that the death penalty would be applied rarely and in cases where there was 100% certainty of the accused guilt.)

well my friend, you have to remember that the majority of presidents in this last hundred years have been attorneys, a majority of the US senate are attorneys, virtually all judges are attorneys, the US house has a very high proportion of attorneys. many state houses are similarly configured. the whole system is designed by, and for the benefit, of attorneys. the system you comment on has been created by the attorneys for their benefit, they are not innocent beneficiaries.

Well you don't want plumbers making laws, now do you? It makes sense that lawyers, who were educated on law, would make the laws. If you had a bunch of people that knew very little about the law in power it would be a complete mess...or each politician would need a team of lawyers advising them, which would lead to even more demand for lawyers. Civil and criminal courts would be even more if a headache to navigate with all the simple, incompetent and shortsighted laws created by uneducated politicians.

Also, I would bet that lawyers make up the majority of politicians around the world, not just in the US. I find it insane to imply that judges should not be educated in the law or that it is a flaw in the system. Of course they should be lawyers.
