If you read an article that says some food is good/bad for you there is a good chance that the author did not actually read or understand the study (or is cherry picking data). If they didn't link directly to the study there is nearly a 100% chance what they are claiming the study says is complete bs. The way media reports science has always been a complete joke.

back in the fifties as a butter substitute when big business painted butter as such a evil. remember endless ads on our first tv (a black and white zenith, with three channels available. sometimes i had to stand on the porch and hold the rabbit ears in the right "sweet spot" so the folks could see dorothy kilgallen or bennet serf? clearly!!). the older you get the more you understand conventional wisdom and what science touts today will be changed for some other miracle discovery tomorrow!

i guess in the jungle you got switched to hydrogenated coconut oil? lol, it was good then bad and now good again

We've just come back from San Francisco today with four bottles of honey. When I asked where it came from, I got the old twisted pouting mouth look towards the mountains behind. Brother in law assured me it's 100% kosha. P100 per bottle.

This is a false equivalence. At the beginning of the paragraph you are talking about big business and advertisements. In the second part of the paragraph you imply it was science that led to this determination that butter is bad when in fact it was profit and greed that resulted in this determination.

ok, let me try again! there was a time (in my youth) when butter was good for you. then somebody invented margarine and suddenly butter was bad for you. now, butter is good for you (in moderation), and margarine is the evil in the "dairy" case.

since i am not expecting to publish any of my posts, i try to keep it simple assuming the readership will read between the lines. so, there is applied science and pure science (as one way to make the distinction between different "scientific" activities) pure science is often paid for and/or performed by the government. i think i have read that tang juice drink and kevlar were both inventions of the government funded space program. applied scientists (employed and whose research is funded by companies) have found ways to make money off of these inventions which is the basic purpose of applied science.

i agree fully with you last sentence indicating that "profit and greed" was the reason for the determination that butter was bad. proven so by applied scientists whose research was funded by those who stood to profit from this change.

near as i can tell, we don't disagree about this. i was just assuming too much in my brief post.

i do not even know how margarine was discovered however i do know it became a butter replacement because butter was "discovered" to be "bad" and margarine "good". it is my opinion that this was done by the companies involved in order to profit from making a palatable butter replacement out of vegetable oils

Margarine was invented in 1869. How old are you?
