Surely you can see the massive differences between a small island country of 25 million people that are mostly politically, racially and culturally homogeneous and a country as massive and diverse as the US?

I think we can carry on the conversation without the personal attacks.

    I don't know.
Consider this with respect to your plan.
Nursing and convalescent homes are very isolated yet they have been the source of many deaths in the US.

It only takes one asymptotic nurse or care giver to transmit the disease to the people being isolated.

This debunks your idea that a portion of the population can be isolated.

Please explain where isolating a portion of the population has been successful.

    I don't know.
Politically Taiwan is a democracy so that is not relevant.

Since when does the concept of people collaborating have anything to do with race and culture?

Do you think this is a racial issue?

I think it has more to do with political leadership and an element of society that is emotionally spurred into oppositional defiance.

"harebrained", like rabbit-sized.. "Hair brained" makes no more sense than anything else you've said recently (joke).

Go back and check who first spelled it like that. My spellcheck strongly resisted it being typed like that. Buy hey, I can admit I didn't immediately know how it is spelled.
Come on now. You are saying the demographics of a democratic country don't matter?
Since always. It has EVERYTHING to do with it.
    :meh:
If you want to ignore important regional, historical and political differences...sure.
I don't think they are as isolated as you think they are. I bet their daily visitor logs are quite long.

St. Louis during the spanish flu. The Spanish flu hit younger people harder than the elderly. St. Louis closed schools and had kids stay home and health outcomes were far better in that city than those that did not.

Just a thought. If it were possible and would be done, to "isolate high risk groups" and let the rest do what they want, business as usual, to "save the economy", wouldn't those of the non isolated people who got sick (now many more because, hey, were all invincible so why care, party on) , still overload the health care systems? Especially since they are relatively healthy, and hence more likely to put up a fight and stay in hospital longer?

Just because you take the elderly out of the equation does not mean letting it run its course would just work without side effects. And, as pointed out before, its simply not practical to basically cut the population in two completely isolated parts.

Another thought: most developed countries borrow trillions every year for much worse reasons than fighting a global pandemic. So if the US have their population suffer under a tanking economy and lack of health care, well, its only a problem of resource allocation that could easily be fixed, if people wanted. They could probably cut the defense budget just a wee bit and finance an unconditional basic income for everyone with the savings.

In other news, whynot disco is open again as I just noticed. We'll see how that goes

I agree with a UBI...and cutting defense spending.

Why Not has been open for many months now. Not the main front section but the back bar. Every time I went in there...and basically every other bar that caters to foreigners...in the past 4 months the majority of the patrons were in the extremely high risk category for COVID mortality...with zero social distancing. If the elderly can't be bothered to protect themselves why should younger people be bothered on their behalf.

I keep my distance at the bars from the old farts playing billiards and poker (cards not being sanitized after every hand...how f'n stupid is sitting around a poker table with 8-10 people, with not a d*mn one of them under 60 years old?) not for them or fear of COVID but because I dread forced quarantine and the inability to make it to the gym during that time. You want younger people to care but when we go out and see nonsense like this you can't possibly think we are going to take any of this seriously.

Selfish behavior is these unhealthy old farts still going out to the bars, socializing, greeting you with handshakes, playing poker sitting shoulder to shoulder, hitting up prostitutes at why not, going out with their wives/gfs to grocery shop, etc, etc.

Oh my goodness ..... 0.1% of 300,000 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, in other words. 300,000 X 0.01 = 300. The latest figures for Covid world wide are 74.65 million infected and 1.675 million dead and in the USA 17,404 million infected and 314,731 dead. From these figures you can easily work out the proper percentages. World dead is 2.2% and for the USA 1.8%.
