My late husband was an electrician and we had a UPS for our pc when we lived there. He told me the purpose of the UPS was to allow time to save any work, and let you turn off the pc safely, before shutting down. He told me not to try to rely on it for extended periods of time.

Correct. And in places like the Philippines where brownouts occur often it is especially useful. It saves both data (you have the time to shut the pc or server down in an orderly manner) and you save your hardware by preventing damage from voltage spikes and inrush surges into the input circuits of your equipment. That kind of damage is additive and the more brownouts you have, the more damage they cause over time (not such a problem in USA and other 1st world countries). I have a radio transceiver with a logic controlled power control that can be greatly damaged if the brownout happens while transmitting! But right, to keep power up you need a generator or solar inverter/ battery combination with a lot of battery storage and several solar cells (UPS batteries are comparatively very small), or other options. And with the UPS you can also keep your internet up for 30 min to a few hours if you just power the modem-router.

I'm sure this ups will serve my needs well. I'm no longer paid to think about or repair electronics. I just want something to plug in that keeps my internet up during the occasional brownouts here and nothing more. I don't want to install and maintain something that is only used for these fairly infrequent events. These things were everywhere in Afghanistan (I think I even remember this brand name from over there) and in my 10 years working there I never recall one of them going bad or having to order a replacement in my office. They were constantly covered in dust, exposed to extreme heat and cold and never maintained but kept on working.

I went ahead and ordered one (total of P5500 including shipping). I will post updates on how it works once I get it and experience a few brownouts with it.

I have always had laptops so the sudden power interruption was never an issue. I will use it to protect my expensive entertainment electronics from NORECO's incompetence.

I wanted to get a UPS but the gf won't let me, saying a generator would be cheaper. (It does last longer and the whole house is lit) but just curious, is it really cheaper? I bought the generator in haste because it was needed for the gf's tutor job, I wasn't able to compare much.

Well they really serve two different purposes. I use both. Generators (new) are much more expensive than UPS, especially if you can run the whole house on it. A 1200VA UPS might cost 5-7K and I think I saw 1000VA generators at handyman on sale for around 15-20k one time. A smaller whole house gas 7000VA generator runs about 50k at Polaris.

Initial cost may be similar for very small generators but a P5k-8k generator won't power an entire house and gas and maintenance is going to cost you a lot more over time. But,as someone else mentioned, they serve completely different purposes.

My gf also objected the UPS purchase, but for different reasons. She works from home and during brownouts she gets to take naps and didn't want the WiFi to stay up for that reason. But her objection didn't hold as I knew it was coming and had already made the purchase before I told her what a UPS was.

APC have a good range. Cheap units if its just for your Modem Router.

https://www.apc.com/shop/ph/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-650VA-230V-AVR-Universal-Sockets/P-BX650LI-MS runs a 30W Modem - Wi-Fi for 1 hour 8 mins. 30W is you Fil Prod Modem running on max, average Wi-Fi runs at 20W max avg 6W so the 1 hour 8 minutes would be the worst case.

    2688 PHP from Laz https://www.lazada.com.ph/catalog/?...spm=a2o4l.pdp_revamp.search.go.77fc677c4TMQbX

Micro Vallley on Locsin had some APC brand UPS. Easy to do a check their models vs Lazada + delivery prices.

It is cheaper but it is only about half the power as the 1200VA we were discussing. For the timing, you are using a lower Ave power than used by me, 6w. So it may very well be that the modem holds up for an hour so getting a 1200VA modem should keep it up a fairly long time. That site is confusing in terms of prices because it mixes standard APC units (a very good US brand) with some brand PC Worx that seems to be licensing the APC name, and others. The list shows some lower power APC more expensive than higher power off-brand.

Agreed it is confusing, the link I used has the calculator in it and I used 30W (worse case) for an hour and 8 mins. 6W was the average Wi-Fi router rate, the optical decoder on the input for the Fil Products Modem would be very little so you would often be only around 6W. if you poke in 6W its 3hrs 22 mins.

If its just to keep the modem up for brownouts 1-1.5 hours then the 650KVA would be ideal. And also could be handy to at least buy time to get the generator started without the modem losing power and taking 10 minutes to re-connect. Plus it has internal AVR for your laptop which you often need for generators and if you want your laptop to last with local power.

Also PC Worx is just a computer store, good delivery and reasonable prices from LazMall. Plus that link is for an APC brand (Philippines models but licensed US) and has 411 positive reviews. So not likely Chinese copies but maybe Chinese or PH made/assembled.

OK but I have a 750va on my fil prod modem router fiber and it only stays up no more than 30 min. I use a larger 1200va for my appliances. In my estimation your estimates are a bit optimistic. I used a ratio given on an APC paper. I suspect a 1200va fil prod modem router will keep up for 1-1/2 to 3 hours. 650va 300w will never make it for an hour lol even at 6 watts.
