    Chickenpox has not been eradicated.

What they look like is irrelevant. Case numbers are not based on what they look like and to find out what a person is infected with by looking at the virus particles (virions) would mean every person would have to have a sample taken, cultured in cell tissue, the virions extracted and then examined under an electron microscope. The flu virus is the flu virus (or strains of that virus) and the Covid virus is the Covid virus (or strains of that virus) - and never the twain shall meet.

Agree. Lock downs have been more harmful than the disease itself... this is without question... yet you can be sure governments worldwide will continue to implement these lockdowns for years to come and will eventually become part of the "new normal" just like searches at airports.

Please tell me where i'm wrong ??
Dumaguete basically locked down 15 March to 15 April last year.
15 April, economy opened partially due to low case numbers, fairly good compliance, quarantining of exposed, and passenger flights cancelled.
15 May, even better so economy opened almost fully, with masks, distancing, and no crowds.
Since then, economy is in trouble but not dead, maybe 60%. Manila and Cebu are still in trouble. We perk along at a couple hundred actives max in a million pop ???

IF OTHER COUNTRIES DID THE SAME, and some did, they should not be in lockdown ??????? They blame their government because they can't slow the spread ?????

Restricting travel, testing and tracing are the answer (pre vaccine) - see Taiwan as an example

The answer, for both posts, is the Philippines itself. Manila just went back into Enhanced Community Quarantine, over a year after COVID first cropped up. "Restricting travel, testing and tracing" have always been a pipe dream. Teeny tiny places with properly submissive populations are only temporarily protected by these measures. As soon as "expats" are let back in, the infection rates rise.

Asking people to mask up to save the lives of others, awareness campaigns, and taking personal responsibility to protect our loved ones that are susceptible to the virus was the right answer, while waiting for people to get vaccinated if it was determined they weren't already immune. I bring that up, because although I was recently vaccinated, I've gone a year sitting next to rounds of infected people without getting infected myself, at least knowingly.

Again, before you get all fired up, just reflect back on the past year and ask yourself if measures the Philippines instituted worked or not. I can guarantee you anyone with a dead family member will disagree.

It depends how you define "worked" and against what as a comparison. Why did it work so well until they lifted the restrictions on internal travel? I think the Philippines has made the best of what they could do within the limited resources the country has.

I certainly wouldn't call Taiwan a "teeny tiny place" and international infection rates will be shown to be directly proportional to the number of travellers from infected areas. Taiwan were early to implement testing on entry had the luxury and co-operation of the telecom companies to trace people in a very short space of time (600,000 in 48 hours at the height - source BBC Panorama) and all without unnecessarily infringing people's privacy. Where there's a will there's a way!

This is the problem. "Worked" would be defined as no infections or deaths, especially to those infected or the loved ones of those who die, right? If something "worked until" then it didn't work. That's why the Philippines and the world has been at it for over a year.

What's the size of Taiwan compared to America, Canada, Russia, or China? Sure it has a large population of submissive, stable people, but the land area isn't big. And again, having the will to kill your economy for a year, then having a climbing infection rate isn't my definition of success, nor does it define success for those who have lost loved ones.

While this discussion continues, the one thing I can't forget is TV footage of dead bodies being removed from apartment blocks in Wuhan at the beginning of all this Covid Pandemic, others being dragged out by force, while certain people who spoke out, disappeared or suddenly died.
There are 130m recorded cases worldwide with 2.83m deaths.
Has the virus peaked, I'd like to think so, I will be more re-assured when I get my second jab.
Stay safe and continue to be cautious, many will still catch it and some will die, dont be one of them!
Look on the bright side....we could of been dealing with a Nuclear fallout!!!!!

Population density is the overriding metric here. It has been proven that this has a direct effect on transmission - 100 people in a tower block are more likely to transmit the infection than the same 100 people living on farms. So to use the countries you quoted - population density per km^2:

Taiwan - 673, USA - 92.9, Canada - 4, Russia - 8.82, China - 178....now take a look at the following link to assist visualisation. The link refers to Taiwan but can be changed for any country

    https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus/country/taiwan

What this does show is that countries that fared worst are those that chose to lock down later and the subsequent mismanagement of the pandemic - those that acted early (even with high population densities) fared better.

Yes I agree deaths are an unfortunate consequence of this virus and should be minimised - and one of the management tools is lockdown whilst another is restricted movement pre- or post.

The Philippines has chosen to remove internal travel restrictions without actually having done anything since the initial lockdown last year - we are now only just beginning to see the effect.

A leading medical expert in the UK has just acknowledged that the failure to use masks earlier was a factor in the mess there - they should have read this Forum in February/March 2020. Also, they failed to shutdown airports and when they decided to do so they gave about 3 weeks notice - so everyone could rush in first! Taiwan is THE model. They used their brains.
