Regarding the question, "what happened to the flu?" .... does anybody think that the covid mitigation measures of staying home, social distancing, mask wearing, combined with the fact that people run to their doctor with the slightest little sniffle might just have had a tangential impact on the number of deaths from the flu in the past year?

Regarding the question, "are lockdowns causing more harm that good" ... we can see the negative effects that the lockdowns have, they are easy to quantify and certainly are real. What we cannot see is how bad the exponential curve of infectious contagion might have been if we hadn't done the lockdowns, we can only guess at that. My "opinion" is that, even will all negative effects factored in, the cost of NOT doing them would have been worse, and instead of being measured in dollars, would have been measured in deaths.

I read an interesting article a few days ago. It said there were zero flu cases in Italy last year. It was probably an exaggeration but the article said there were very few sales of over the counter flu type medicines sold.
The article went on to say the reduction in flu cases might be attributed to people wearing masks and social distancing.
It all sounded reasonable to me.

    I don't know.
Well said. This is the logic that the leadership has followed. The lock-downs being better than the effects of the exponential growth. Even the financial impacts to the economy would have been higher had lock-downs not have been implemented and the virus allowed to spread exponentially. With so many more sick people, hospitals full, at some point people would have stopped going out anyway.

I admire your ability to word things in a way that makes it seem irrefutable even though it is complete speculation.

You're very sure that we'd have more than 130 million infections and 3 million deaths if people had known masks do not prevent COVID, but should be worn to help contain the spread, made them aware of the risks groups, and asked them to choose their own fate. At least you understand there are negative effects of lockdowns.

All speculation in favor of the antithesis of freedom. This quote
is particularly telling. You feel they've evidenced leadership by being the first to bring the infection to Negros? Wasn't your "leadership" and the "leadership's" driver patient zero and 1 for Negros, or were there more "leaders" I didn't hear about that were infected first?

I find it incredible to read people still saying "Look at all the disruption when we only had x cases/deaths." That is the same as saying that the cost of fitting seat belts in vehicles was not worth it because few people NOW get seriously injured/die in crashes.

The current situation in Manila (from CNN) - a place known for overcrowding, of course, but also for people failing to follow lockdown rules (that combination is lethal):

"As coronavirus cases continue to rise, hospitals in Metro Manila are forced to deal with 'doomsday' scenarios brought by an overwhelming number of patients seeking treatment, the head of a doctors' group lamented Tuesday.

"It's like a doomsday scenario in the movies. That's the situation. Numbers are moving up and the hospitals are getting overwhelmed," Philippine Hospital Association President Dr. Jaime Almora told CNN Philippines' New Day.

Almora recounted situations that are far too common for those tending to their loved ones who got infected — long lines in emergency rooms, overworked medical staff, medical resources running out, and dying patients who could not get immediate treatment.

"The situation is very dire. I actually describe it as a nightmare. Because the most dreaded thing that we don't want to happen is happening in reality and there's so much anguish, so much suffering already, fear, despair, frustration, all the things happening in our hospitals," he said.

"Seeing patients dying is one of the things that really breaks a health worker's heart because every health worker wants to be of help but when you become incapacitated, you're helpless already because of the sheer number [of cases]," Almora added."

No lockdowns and this would have been the situation almost everywhere. The alternatives to lockdown are not in place.
