The slower you go the more time you have to spend looking behind you for reckless idiots coming up on you. That's time not spent looking for reckless idiots in front of you.

People driving much slower than the flow of traffic are a danger to everyone on the road.

There are too many people driving at first world freeway speeds. These roads and the peoples mindset are not suitable for these speeds.

When I started this topic, it was sadly after a boy 15 years old was killed just round the corner from our home by a hit and run driver, while riding his cycle at 9;45 at night. I dont know whether he had lights on his bike or not, an inquest has opened.
The driver of the car was quickly found the next day, apparently aged 22 with a previous conviction for dangerous driving!
I hope that lessons for both drivers and cyclist's will be learnt by this tragic accident. upload_2021-5-10_11-5-4.png

Sure. But there are a hell of a lot more people putting around at 10-20kph in areas that can easily handle traffic going 50-70kph.

The mix of different speeds is extremely dangerous. I'm certainly not saying the speed limit through town should be 100kph+...that would be ridiculous. You shouldn't be going 20kph in a 70kph (like the southern highway) zone and you shouldn't be doing 70kph in a 20kph zone (like in downtown).

The speed limit here is rarely posted. The speed limit is fluid. Driving from Dumaguete to Valencia at 10:30am and driving the exact same route at 6:00pm require very different speeds. (40-50kph compared to 15-30kph). People who can't adjust are a danger to everyone.

Totally agree here But and there is always a but, You I am sure as I do take into account the Idiots that emerge without stopping and/or looking, that just come out without a care from the side roads and Road side Shops and stalls, this can alter any flow of traffic and cause problems :sorry:

In my opinion 70 kph is too fast for the Southern Highway. I was driving it this weekend. There are construction excavations in the road that are poorly marked with sticks and caution tape. While veering around one in my lane I find an oncoming pick-up in my lane (wrong side of road for him) who is passing a vehicle that was traveling at least 55 kph.

My point is that the infrastructure and behavior (poorly marked road repairs) cannot support 70 kph safely. A two lane highway each way is not reliably two lanes. (Poorly marked road construction, occasional parked vehicles, etc.) The outside (slow) lane is not useful and dangerous to drive in.

Sure. Something one always has to look out for. But...and there is always a but...right , once you have lived here for awhile you know where the most dangerous intersections are and where these idiots tend to live. You also learn to identify these absent minded morons from a distance. Their driving behaviors are quite predictable. If you come up on someone riding a beat up motorcycle wearing shorts, flip-flops and no helmet (many times riding 3-4 people on the bike) you know they are going to be predictably unpredictable and that you need to slow down to avoid their stupidity.

70kph is less than 45mph. You have heavily congested two lane roads (not highways) that run through cities in the US that have higher speed limits than that. That, sometimes, 4 lane road going south can easily handle 70kph outside of town limits. (It is 30kph within town limits.)

If you are getting to a point to where your eyesight/hearing/reaction times can no longer handle those very reasonable speeds it may be time to hire a driver to get you around.

Opinion vs. facts. There will always be people and areas behind the times that cause issues like there are throughout the Philippines. Rye would be the kind of guy to get taxed, providing funds to the improvement of the area to help it adjust with the times and argue to keep overly slow bicycles, horses, and tricycles off the road, for the safety of everyone. Skipjack seems like the guy that would argue, "I don't know why we ever stopped walking. My shoes work fine." Those two ideologies will always clash. I'd suggest there's places both could live and get exactly what they want, but they both choose to live in a place where neither will get what they want. What to do.
