Looking at some deals on 2nd hand vehicles. Does anyone have experience of spare parts availability, servicing standards etc for Hyundai, Kia, Honda in Dumaguete?
    Thanks in advance.

Hyundai and Kia have dealerships in Dumaguete, Honda regularly sends mechanics to Dumaguete to do maintenance on Honda cars.
Spare parts should thus not be a major problem for any of these three makes.
Getting a Honda in need of repair fixed might be problematic if the problem is urgent (because those guys from Cebu aren't here every week).
As for "servicing standards" (which I read as a "quality of work" enquiry), I can't answer that from personal experience. Among my neighbours and friends all three makes are driven, and I haven't heard any horror stories.

Something to bear in mind when buying a second- hand car in PH, usually they have Low Milage on them, a long run in that country and especially on the island of Negros would be about 100mls it is near impossible to do such a journey in less than 4hrs in a car, likely it will take closer to 5hrs, so for every 100mls on the clock of a car in PH, it will be the equivalent of around 250mls in a car from a 1st world country and I'm not just talking about the time taken to do the journey but more on the actions to drive such a distance, within that 100mls you will be braking much more, changing gear much more and producing much more wear and tear on the vehicle in general (apart from the indicators they are not often used there) every other mechanical part will have a fair bit of wear and tear on them.

It has been mentioned here on DI that there is a good mechanics shop close to the airport, I have never been there but there have been some very good reports on this?

In my own experience of buying a used car, I bought a re-possessed vehicle from the BPI bank I had to go to Cebu to get this, this was 16months old and I paid 63% of the new price to have this, it had 9500klms on the clock and still had 20months warranty provided I had it serviced by Honda and as Dutchie righty said they sent their mechanics over from Cebu to DGTE to service all the Honda cars in the area, it is now 5yrs of age and has never given us any problems to be expected I guess as it is a Honda.

Much like everything else in PH keep your expectations low, if there is a few good car mechanics around expect them to be few and far between, there is a young German Guy in Valencia named Marco that has some up-to-date Car diagnostic equipment, he likes to help out Foreigners, of course he does not charge for this that would be illegal there? ask around at the Red Table in Valencia, also there is a US guy that drinks there named Dave he has helped quite a few guys out especially with motorbikes, but originally a car mech.

Thanks Dave, good advice. Does BPI have a compound in Cebu where they keep the repos - can you just show up and see what's on offer?

Would like to make contact with the guy who can service/repair motorbikes. Anyone have contact details for this Dave, or do you just turn up at Red Table and ask for him?

BUENA MANO BPI, this is their on-line catalogue, initially some cars are offered on closed bids as at auction, when they first intr0duce a car to their site it is often under closed bids mine had been up for sale for 5 months, at first they wanted a crazy price for it around 10% less than new value at 11 months old, every two months this was reduced by around 150K, buy paying cash you get a further 10% reduction on the asking price, you will see that they have two sites in Cebu where they store cars, also one in Bacolod, other banks provide this service also but for some reason now unknown to me BPI seemed the easiest to deal with? by appointment I was able to go and view this car, the security man had charged up the batt and I was able to drive in in their yard, when I went into the bank to pay for it I asked if they did insurance which they did it cost me P20K for a good fully comp insurance, they do have a lessor one at P15K, Honda wanted 35K, the reason perhaps that I got a great deal on this car and that no dealers were after it was; it had a dent to the rear the size of a fist this was on the extended plastic bumper just below the rear light cluster, each corner had a scuff on the bottom skirt, I guess the original owner could drive OK only he would keep bashing into things? a kettle of Hot Water soon removed the dent, the rest I did not care about as this was a good car mechanically and all the scuffs were on plastic, the car had been first registered on my birthdate 22nd Dec and the first owner was named Alexander, which is the name of my son, so I just had to buy this, as it happened this car was the top of the range for that model the Honda Mobilio RS variant which does not mean Rally Sport, but Road Sailing would you believe? it is a great car and I would recommend this, they no longer produce this, they have now put a slightly larger body on it using the same drive train and call it the BRV I think it is just a tad more expensive when new around 50K, but now it is a better looking car than ever before and even more practical, recently I just bought a Toyota Yaris here in UK but it does not even come close to that particular Honda.

That is about the size of it, Ask the local drinking Masters (of which I was also one) at the Red Table about him, Dave is around 6ft and always wears a Wife beater T shirt he has fair to slight red hair and is a very pleasant guy, the only thing I could say that is bad about him is; he drives a Harley back in US, but he does not have the obligatory Tatts that goes with that persona? I returned to UK around 12 weeks ago and he was leaving to go back to US a week or two behind me, but I do believe it was his intention to return ASAP, Marco the German also drinks there, I believe he is good with cars but also dabbles with the bikes, up in Valencia there is a Pinoy who is said to be good on the bikes and I know he has done engine conversions/upgrades for a few US guy, his name in Jun Jun I believe? when you pass the 7/11 there when it is on your left, you then take the street second on the left and around 2/300mtrs along that road there is the Bike shop on the right hand side, I f you do go to the Red just mention me Scottish Dave and that will get you places, in fact they may kick you over to the park, just pay my last outstanding bill there and all will be OK.
