For those considering an expensive special purpose contract with a service provider to watch sports, here's a much cheaper option.

I have a subscription for PureVPN (link). They offer a 5 year contract for 85$, about 1.40 per month. There are many other VPN (Virtual Private Network) providers, but I found PureVPN to be fast, and they have world wide servers. They also offer shorter contracts, a bit more expensive, but still cheap compared to alternatives.
What it is, is a way to make websites think that you are in the country where that website is.
Television channels streamed on the web often limit live sport event streams to their own country, because of rights issues. So if you try watching a stream from your home country in the Philippines you often get the "this video cannot be played" warning.
Once you have a VPN subscription, no more of that. You can set the VPN service to connect to their server in your country of choice and voila, no more "this video cannot be played".

I use it to watch football, Tour de France and other cycling events, speedskating, tennis, and more. I just use google to find out which tv station in which country streams an event I would like to watch and connect the VPN accordingly.

I found that some TV channels, particularly UK BBC, actually know when you are using a VPN and block it (BBC UK requires some licence payment). May be different with the subscription though.

Mike, when that happens, or if there's no Dutch station that has it, I simply find a different tv station that streams the event online, for instance, I occasionally watch Formula One on RTL (Luxemburg) or an Austrian TV channel. Who cares if the commentary is in a language you don't understand (but I happen to understand German). For cycling events I often end up with Belgian TV, especially Vuelta and Giro d'Italia.

I use ExpressVPN but the problem is more and more big sporting events are being locked up with a big streamer ....for example in UK its SkySports Australia Fox Sports or Kayo and each country seems to have something similar...all requiring a subscription.
In addition many can now detect a VPN is being used and block you.

I have just lost the ability to watch the European golf tour championship with the closure of GolfTV in the US (paid a modest $10 monthly subscription with my VPN set to any Asian country other the Philippines)

I have Cignal (satellite) service so today I will use their Pay Per View for access to all World Cup games on 2 channels P1,999 I let you know how it goes. The 1,999 is a one off payment for all games so good value I think.

Private Internet Access PIA is a decent , little bit expensive VPN, but functions fine for Kayo sports using Aussie VPN and BBC, last year it could be hit or miss for the Super Rugby and internationals but they actively change and improve the servers to get around detection. Also sometimes running a VPN in a browser that as previously open before the VPN is run I often get a not available in your country, restart everything focused on running the VPN and connecting before opening a fresh browser and also I have read using incognito browser can help.

Very happy with the World Cup coverage on Cignal pay per view...I like the way they replay the matches through the day. I understand Skycable has it too.

I had that problem (especially re BBC's iPlayer) with ExpressVPN but NEVER (as in 'not once') with NordVPN, which is also much cheaper. Been using it for almost 3 years now. It also has obfuscated servers, split tunnelling plus a variety of other related products.

I am not watching the World Cup at home cause I don't want all this headache with Internet and VPN and Geo blocking and all possible kind of problems you can face.

Hence I really enjoy watching the games at a ba, at "Breaktime Ocean" at Northpoint.

"Breaktime Ocean" is streaming all games and you can enjoy the World Cup together with some other football fans in a nice and pleasant atmosphere having some nice cold beers and decent food.

For me it turned out to be a best way of watching the games. No hazzle with internet and stuff, just sit down, order a beer and enjoy yourself and hopefully your team.
