I'm sure there has been many times when some of us wished we could speak a second or third language. Some people find it fairly easy to pick up enough words to get by in another language, while others just can't get their tongue round tricky pronounciations. Just think how much easier life would be, if where ever you travelled you could communicate in spoken or written word.....just another thought for today. JB
Esperanto this is a universal language created more than 100yrs ago, there is only around 100,000 people in the world speak this, mostly in Europe, but it is known in China and even South America.
The idea of a "global language" is older than English itself. "Latin was the world's first recorded global language, or lingua franca, carried across Western Europe by soldiers and traders in the days of the Roman Empire," says Salikoko Mufwene, a linguistics professor at the University of Chicago.

It's official! English is an official language in 57 countries in the world, as well as the official and native language of four others. Among these 57 countries, English is also a primary language in 20. This ought to give you an idea of how English became the universal language. For now anyways. 100 years from now, I highly expect it to be Chinese.
I believe that getting English to be the official language of all pilots and air traffic controllers went a long way to establishing it as a Universal Language. But there are still those pesky Chinese fighter jets landing on their aircraft carriers who refuse to speak it
The idea that Esperanto would become universal was ridiculous. EU cannot even agree with the English about what shape for legal consumption a carrot or potato should be. Anyway English is the universal language due to music lyrics, Beatles, Elvis etc examples. Yes American counts. English also spread widely due to sailing the world and getting everyone to believe in religious fairytales and on landing state loudly I claim everything you have as ours in the name of Queen Victoria. Minority languages also include Chinese, where even their take away menus are written in English. Also "f*ck Off" sounds very English and is I believe used on a worldwide basis?
I thought the Spanish were the first to do that not the English, I may be wrong, it might of been the Portuguese. However many Armada's weighted with gold sunk to the bottom of the Sea, "Where your treasure lies so does your heart"
