We have started work on our farm property and one of the first things we are doing is to excavate for a farm pond; which means we have excess soil.

Send me a PM if you are trying to source dirt on the cheap.

The pond is just over an acre so there is a bit of soil that will be available much cheaper than what we sourced when we backfilled for our house.

    Here's a couple pics.

Good luck! A buddy of mine took on a similar task a few years ago to build a self sustaining pond for swimming and fishing. His was similar in size and 15 ft deep. His ground didn't have enough clay so he had to use a liner to prevent water loss into the ground. Evaporation is replenished by rain or a water hose since there is no natural flow. Initially he had aerators, but no longer uses them. He spend a lot of time figuring out what he needed from plants to fish to create a self-sustaining environment. It probably took about 3 years before he didn't need to stock minnows or feed fish food to maintain the larger fish. Now the challenge is to take so many fish out of the pond so they don't eat all the smaller fish and die off. A never ending labor of love. lol

I would just spread the soil out and plant vegetable's around 2/ 3rds of your Fish Pond. Add Fencing for sure!

The soil is fairly heavy clay so hoping it will hold water...that or I will have a big hole in the ground growing weeds. Actually there is some existing drainage during rains that we are diverting into the pond, plus we will be pushing rain water towards the pond from both drainage as well as off of future structures that will be on the farm.

I know I can get striped snakehead, local catfish and obviously tilapia to stock the pond. I plan on cast netting some rivers as well to add some diversity. I'd love to get largemouth bass, bluegill and giant snakehead and know they are stocked in some reservoirs in Luzon (been bass fishing before in the PI); but no clue the rules on bringing them to Negros.

We are definitely leveling out the property, plus keeping some back for the raised beds we will be utilizing for much of the growing area of the farm, but just too much to use. The civil sub is also asking around so hopefully things we will get sorted.

Appreciate it...unfortunately I am pushing most of the rocks I can into the pond for fish structure...and there is a lot of rocks, some too big to move.

He stocked it with bass, catfish and bluegill to begin, along with an annual minnows restock. Another part of the equation was putting in structure (wood palates and some piles of large rocks) for the smaller fish to hide and the catfish to nest. Tadpoles and frogs came naturally and help with the mosquitos. If you look at the pond picture I sent, you will see areas where he where he also planted reeds and other plants that typically grow in water edge to provide cover for the smaller fish.

I've got three sides stepping down in depth for structure, 1 side will have a gradual slope down to depth. The attached pic will show we are not lacking for rocks.
