I have many times, the only issue was once I let them select the destination and they booked me to India. Upon boarding in the U.S. they wanted to see my visa for entry into India (which I did not have). I explained it was a throw away ticket and they let me board and had no problems entering the Phils. Since then I selected my own destination and made sure it was visa free.
I originally came here with a cheap throwaway to China and was never questioned about Visas (I never even thought about it!). I later bought a cheap throwaway at $9.99 (it was 2017 so not sure of the company but onwardticket.com is doing them now for $20) when returning from a Visa run to Vietnam and I knew it was a risk because internet reviews showed some never arrived (sent by text/email). It never arrived.
Something to consider. Make sure your throw away ticket is to a country where you do not need a visa. Someone booked a throw away ticket to India. They needed a visa to enter India so....OPPS!!
