I am Australian and non military so had to look it up. To help those others scratching their heads: "On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that "two Battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps."
Royal Marines founded October 28th 1664 as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot (or Admiral's Regiment) - renamed to Marines in 1672
In 1995, while on a project, I lived in the new very nice flats on the field of the old Royal Marine Barracks in Portsmouth. The museum was very informative.
