It seems to be a hobby around our way to constantly make loud bangs using a modified bamboo tube and i am told the combustion source is lighter fluid. It used to happen every year around Christmas and new year time but this year it started over a month ago, from morning until 8 or 9 pm BANG bang BANG bangBANG bangBANG bangBANG bangBANG bang bangity BANGITY bang BANG. A few years ago we saw 2 teenage boys firing this device close to our house so my wife shouted some filipino abuse at them and they made off, now they fire this thing along the road a bit, there are many houses and people living there and as i see or hear nobody scolding them this seems to be an acceptable activity. I have lived in the Philippines many years now and i still have not been able to work out what makes filipino's tick so i guess i will have to file this in with the noisy motorbike exhaust's. BUT does it make me a bad person to hope, wish and even pray that someday this device will misfire and blow a hand off, or maybe i would settle for a few fingers ?
We live far from any real civilization, but, either their teachers or parents buy the children whistles and noise makers of any kind. Then we have the occasional loud mufflers. When that is not enough, they learned to make noises blowing into their hands! Im guessing it has something to do with sheer boredom.
Maybe most of the people don't care about it or are more happy if its loud. If you grow up with that you will be ok with all the noises like rooster, crazy motorbikes, videoke at 6 a.m., Bamboo-Bangs, etc. I think most of the people don't care about it. But my wife hates it I also can't understand why some people wants to live on the main road. Its extremely loud. Maybe they don't hear the Jeepney's, Motorbikes, etc anymore because there whole life was loud and they are used to it. I didn't grow up with loud neighborhoods. In Europe was never very loud because they didn't want to disturb others and the people following mostly the rules. But I live here and have to adapt it. It's similar to the traffic situation, a lot don't care about the right of way and you have to wait without going angry (like me at the beginning). So, it's just a culture thing.
I think the attitude/"culture" can be summed up in one word SELFISHNESS. They only seem to care about themselves, and the education system accentuates the issue. Dancing and loud music take precedence over traditional learning/subjects and how each individual is perceived by their own kind results in LOUD NOISE. They do not care about, nor have any respect for, their neighbours, or even family in many cases. As long as they can't hear the world around them they seem to be happy. I have lived and worked in many places in SE Asia and the Philippine people are the worst for their attitude in this respect. China was similar, though not as bad, 30 years ago and Koreans like noise also - the difference being that the law (regarding traffic noise - motorbikes etc) is enforced and the people generally had a respect for their neighbours. 15 years ago when we bought this land and built our house it was idyllic - no neighbours and surrounded by fields and wildlife. Now we have neighbours and having electricity equals hari cokey machine(s) - I kin hate them! But I married a Filipino who happens to be the love of my life and far more diplomatic than I. So here we are - loving life and the Philippines, but traffic & Sundays!!!!!
As i have said before in previous posts the constant noise washes over me now and is not a problem, my reason for not liking the sporadic bangs is that one of our dogs is almost 11 years old and over the years he has became very timid so these bangs really are stressful for him.
I understand that they may be bored but i fail to see how the banging can alleviate it, the first few bangs may be amusing (to some) but once it's going to the hundred's what type of moron could still be amused ?
My family is a contributor to the noise. My wife has a large speaker and microphone and my house seems to be the gathering for her family and friends frequent karaoke. How do I feel about that? The other benefits outweigh the noise pollution. How does my boy feel about that? Friday he told me he got an attachment to his bicycle to make it sound more like a motorcycle. I can take all that. What I can't stand is when they cook salty fish outside and don't shut the door. Conclusion: I no longer hear very well but the nose still working overtime.
Just noticed the other day that some of the banging is coming from a backfiring motorbike in our area. I have not heard any vehicle backfire for over 40 years, i remember it was quite common in my younger days. Makes me wonder if some clown has deliberately modified his motorbike
