Need help. I have a 97 corolla and and at low speeds around town it causes a jerking sensation. First gear is the worst 2nd , 3rd , 4th gets progressively better due to gear ratio. It is worse with the a/c on. It has plenty of power when you step on the gas. The plugs, wires and timing have been changed or checked. It is a 5 speed with a carb.

Thinking it could be the fuel pump for one
It could be the sending unit in the distributor or a bad cap
It could also be the carb its self.

So lets have a vote which one to replace first!

All input would be helpful on how to check these items also to see if it is the culprit.

Also need a good mechanic that can figure it out.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I would clean out the carb before replacing anything. I know nothing about cars though.

I am surprised it is not fuel injected, I would start by plugging an error code reader into the OBDII (I think thats what they call it) and seeing if I could get the car to tell me what was wrong. I would also check all vacuum lines and make sure none were broken. Good luck.

may I suggest adrich mechanical, they are the next place up the road from flip-flops resto bar........on the same side.

I had a few problems diagnosed and fixed on my Suzuki van, and they are very reasonably priced........eg last week............engine oil and filter change, auto trans oil changed, sump on gear box off and screen cleaned and new gasket, minor adjustment on throttle body.........total....2160p

Replacing the plug wires and plugs is a waste of money if you do not replace the rotor and cap at the same time, there are several cheap parts that need to work in unison to make the car run properly.
Looks like you are half way there, have a decent guy check your rotor and cap, spend 25 bucks on having a crab kit installed and turn the key. You will probably be ok then... good luck.....

    Another possible fix...

First beer is the worst 2nd , 3rd , 4th gets progressively better due to getting buzzed.
