Thanks!! I have a couple of people seeing if they can repair or do something for less than the cost of a new one. I might have to go visit this guy if they cant help.

I had alt.problems too. After checking prices I decided to have it rewinded but still the alternator warning light did not come on and the aut. gearbox was slipplng. BIG Problem. Found a guy named Rey, lives in Talay. (will give you his # by PM if you want him)
He was expensive P1500 for one day work but did a terrific job. Got all electrical parts out, repaired the computer and put an extra fuse in to prevent overcharging. This is 5 weeks ago, no problem since and gearbox fine.
On my search for an new alternator I found out that a original one (for Izusu trooper) cost about 28.000. A chinese replica about 8,000. ( had to be ordered from Manila, 3 days) My advice is , go around the shops with the original and find out if there's a replica if you want one.

if one was going to o'haul the alternator the bearings should be replaced, the slip rings machined or replaced, brushes replaced, regulator tested and or replaced, aftermarket regs are normally inexpensive, if your reg fails it can overcharge normally charging at 18v -25v - diode failure or leakage can result in a battery draining overnight sometimes with a faint glow of the warning light.
in au the market got flooded with the chinese imports, it became not worth it to even dismantle the old unit to inspect, with a 3 year warranty was hard to pass up, problem was it killed the auto electrical industry

I had them open up my alternator (my car is only 2 years old), and they found the problem was the IC voltage regulator. Replaced that at a tremendous savings, and I am having no more problems. Amazing how many people would just go with the first, and most expensive, suggestion
    they made.

If the car is only two years old, would it not be covered by warranty?

I thought that, too, unfortunately not!! But, apparently, it is not uncommon at all for the alternator not to be covered.

if the car has a 3 year warranty the alternator should be under warranty unless listed in the not covered section eg, battery brake pads,

in your case where the reg failed the mileage would be very low so you dont need to O'haul the alternator, just repair the fault.
