I just bought 500 seeds of brussels sprouts for my mother-in-law in Valencia. Although she has a 'green thumb' I have my doubts whether this experiment will suceed in our warm climate. Has anyome ever tried this ? I'm definetely looking forward to the outcome.

Jim is correct about this they need shade and just a little sun, with just about all above ground brassicas it is better to plant in firm ground, they are not deep rooting and the wind tears at the roots, keep them well watered if not they will not have tight hearts and quick go to seed.

I find it very strange we are not having a conversation here about Onions, they are the Jewels in the crown, I would assume very easy to grow in PH, I grow them young for Salads onions in my greenhouse in UK, which is a lean to on a brick wall facing south, it gets too hot in the middle of summer however the onions do well in this, so I imagine they would also grow well in any hot country and not a problem in PH, when you think on it they must be about the most used vegetable anywhere in the world?

As a rule of thumb green top growth does well in shade, Brassicas, Peas, Beans and the like, but not so root crops, grow Potatoes in the shade and you get long leafy tops and nothing at the bottom, same with Turnips which is also a member of the Brassica family.

I should mention that about the only thing onions are susceptible too is Neck Rot. perhaps in PH better to be grown on a mound of earth a bit like Potatoes especially in rainy season, raised beds are the best way to grow just about everything and especially with Veg.
