A view-blocking fence which wiped out the panoramic harbour vista from a Wellington apartment must go. Environment Court judge Brian Dwyer said on Friday that Peter and Sylvia Aitchison had established their case by an overwhelming margin. Aitchison, along with the Wellington City Council, had asked the court to at least reduce the height of a child’s play fort built by David Walmsley which blocked the Wellington harbour view from their Maida Vale Rd property in the suburb of Roseneath. During the past week, the Aitchisons presented evidence from experts about the effects of the fence that they said had knocked $NZ900,000 ($839,000) off the value of their $NZ1.6 million ($1.49 million) property. I know a hill in Consolacion, Cebu where a Norwegian built a beautiful 2 story house on the top of the hill with a great view of the ocean and no other houses around. Then a filipino built a 3 story house directly in front of him but slightly downhill, the only other house within a reasonable distance. The extra story destroys the view. But as karma goes, another person built a 4 storey just down from the 3 story and blocked HIS view. And life goes on.
