It seems onions are mostly grown in Central Luzon and Ilocos region and potatoes rather in the Northern part of Luzon. So not really in Negros Oriental. But what about leek. Has anybody tried to plant them in the Dumaguete region ?
Having been a vegetable gardener for a big part of my life I see no reason not to try it, as with most things here they will do better in the shade, good 50% shade netting is available on Lazada, the other main point is; mostly soil here is a good free draining type so keep them well watered, not giving a light sprinkle every day but a good soaking three times a week to stop them going to seed. Nowandthen, I'm guessing you are a Welshman Haha.

You mentions onions grown in Central Luzon and Ilocos - is that climate related? As you probably know, leeks are the same family as onions and garlic - have you tried growing them in Dumaguete? I think I tried garlic once when I was there but with little success - I could grow it (also leeks and onions) well in the UK (plant October or February and harvest about September), but fungal and bacterial diseases can be a problem with some of the onion family. Some diseases like hot and wet conditions (as in Phils), some like cold and wet! But, as suggested by @DAVE1952, have a go and see what happens!
