Telco giants PLDT and Globe have finally agreed to proceed with the first step in improving internet speed in the Philippines.

On Thursday, June 16, 2016, both announced they have entered into an Internet protocol (IP) peering, which allows the internet users of PLDT and Globe networks to directly connect and exchange traffic. This is a bilateral deal between the two, and excludes the other ISPs such as local and regional cable TV companies that also sell Internet access.

IP peering allows PLDT and Globe internet users (via mobile, DSL broadband, fiber-to-home, etc) access to data coming from the other network to no longer be routed outside the country, such as in Asia, US and Europe, before returning to the Philippines. This outward routing thru other networks delays data transmission and slows internet connectivity.

This also means less dependence on international cables that are vulnerable to the likes of the 2008 incident, where major international cables were damaged. An earthquake in Taiwan prevented Philippine customers from accessing local sites, government websites, and local email.

The deal takes effect in 30 days.

I have no problem with my Smart LTE speed but a major problem with the ridiculous capping after less than an hour of youtube or any download.

I bet the peering is more to save on international bandwidth than providing better service.
