I do not have knowledge of the curriculum in Switzerland but in the US and Philippines there are many cuts in "education" without any detrimental effect, such as Creative dance, music, art, civics just to name a few. These subjects are a luxury and not needed by most people in our everyday life. Unfortunately many students continue their higher education in these subjects thru college and end up unemployable as these are not marketable skills. The bureaucrats in charge were educated by the same system they are now trying to regulate.....so don't expect them to make sensible cuts. IMO There is nothing WRONG with taking these classes but be realistic in recognizing the future prospects of employment BEFORE spending your hard earned money. There are many useless college degrees today and that is one reason the unemployment rate is so high for recent college grads in US.
In the shittiest inner city school in Berlin kids learn Turkish before German and the toilets are so dirty they don't go there but rather hold it until they're home. No thanks
When my brother started grade school a stones throw away from home, my parents transfered him to Piapi Elementary School, later named North City Elementary School mainly because of the bad boys that broke his pencil which was followed by a broken thumb the next day. Another thing was that some teachers would let their pupils clean their houses during school hours. Ten years later, I went to grade one in Pulantubig and spent most of the afternoon plucking my teacher's gray hair. In grade two, my teacher was all gray so I spent most of the day teaching my classmates how to read. They're lucky they're singing and dancing now.
The Private school where my 12 year old step daughter goes is nothing more than a day care center. I refuse to send her to a public school because its probably worse.
I think the whole point of picking a school for the child is a place where they can discover their strengths as well as their limitations. Those kids scrubbing their teacher's house could have made it to college if they had good foundation. And only a good school (plus other factors of course) can make us good at what we become whether it be a ditch digger or an architect.
