Every year or so I like to ask this question and then to gauge the direction Dumaguete is headed. Has Dumaguete become more clean or more Dumaguete? Please explain your reasons.
With the rise in population, traffic, ect. along with no change in services and infrastructure i would have to say its going backwards
Yup it's all over! Just got back from the beach and every Sunday it's the same. Everyone enjoying their grills and picnics and when they leave there are paper plates, plastic bags/bottles etc etc and the list goes on! They just don't give a crap about anyone or anything.
I remember one Sunday at the beach one of the locals actually complaining about the crap others had left behind, and what was his solution ? he kicked it all off the sea wall into the sea,,, job done,,,
And the biggest problem is of you say so something to them about it you get the "it's not your country just go home" attitude!
In the past there was not the Dumaguete dump fire. So things are not getting better environmentally. Now the elections are over, so they does not have to be any big "put the fire" out show. The emergency money to work on the dump has most like been doled out, I mean spent, prior to the new politicians moving into their office. So there is nothing more really to be done in the eyes of the local people. Just take the sick people to the hospital from the toxic flumes. Note: When it rains there is actually more toxic smoke in the air than when it is dry in the area of the dump. My vote would be that things are getting worst particularly in the Banangay Candu-uay, and Bolago (? spelling)
For me I'd say things are going worse. Not hard to see why but all the trash and no locals care. Its sad when a foreigner cares more about litter and pollution than a local. Noise pollution is ever increasing as well but locals act like the increased noisiness is a good thing. As far as I see it Dumaguete is seriously doomed without a very huge change which would need a police department, lto, and such offices that were willing to seriously crack the whip. Get caught littering throw them in jail for 24 hours and a 500p fine. Vehicle has nasty of exhaust then impound and destroy it if not fixed and paid in full within 7 days. Urinating in public.... I'd go with castration and defecation having a broom handle shoves up their rear... sideways. But nope, Dumaguete is just doomed. Nothing will change unless its us. In the end I'd even go as far as to say the Philippines itself is doomed. The only *fix* might be is if the Philippines was conquered for a generation or two and put under foreign rule it *might* actually fix some issues!
Check out Zamboaquita,,, clean ,clean, clean. Even the school teachers get into the act of keeping their school and surrounding area spotless.. big thanks to the Mayor of this town that takes pride in his community...Dumaguete and surrounding areas need to shape/clean up..look at what the rivers that flow into the city beach areas...Full of plastics that are thrown upstream, in them. These plastics go with the current (south) and end up floating for years, littering the beaches, or being eaten by marine life(turtles) that think it is jellyfish..
