    Rainy season reptile

From the plastic love seat on my porch I can see through the gate to a patch of dirt road running past. To the left, out of sight, is the corner of a wetland or swamp (this time of year), and the same to the right. Two weeks ago, sitting there, I spied a long gray tail crossing the road as though from one swamp corner to the other. Too big for a feral cat, but who knows. Then today, sitting down, I see the same. Definitely too big to be a cat. I go over to the corner, and look at the right-hand swampy area through the wire fence. I don’t see the creature, but immediately hear a splash and see ripples at about 10 to 15 feet into the wet. Nothing surfaces. Whatever it is, at least it is afraid of me.

    What can this creature be?

I agree with JP, or a monitor. My wife is terrified of them but thankfully the dogs protect us. We've had some bigggg ones trespass (5ft or more) and the dogs promptly chase them away.
    Good dogs
If interested have a local boy make a trap for you. All you need is a piece of bamboo (or pvc for tube), a trigger (normally bamboo) and a sapling or 2nd peice if wood for a spring. We never caught a momma sized one but did get a smaller one. Celebrate with a bar-b-que. If you've ever had snake, its about the same taste and texture.

One of my dogs caught a small monitor lizard, I took it out of the dogs mouth and let it go in the field. They are harmless to humans and run away.
They will eat smaller reptiles, rats and mice and more.

Probably against the law for foreigners to kill them.
