Hello, Does anyone happen to know if vermicompost (worm castings) is available anywhere. A quick Google search shows that folks are doing it in the Philippines with African Nightcrawlers mostly, but nothing I could find for the Negros area. I really want to get my hands on quite a bit as we start looking at landscaping in (hopefully) the not too distant future. I want to stay away from chemical fertilizers as much as I can. Thanks! vermicompost shawn.. before we started our worm bins, we purchased both vermicompost and vermicastings from Alex at GreenFarm Systems. he's located a bit south and then west of the airport. from the hiway; turn off of the paved road immediately after a large building under construction (most framing) and follow the gravel road to the end. see the circle on the map. best text ahead cuz he's not always there. 3920 924 8353 norm : ))~
Shawn 'n Norm, I don't know much about gardening and the various worms, but. There's a place - coming from the north (airport) on the main highway that had the most black dirt with HUGE Nightcrawlers all over inside the dirt. The guys sells retail....he happily showed us his stocj about 2 or 3 years ago. My wife is sleeping now. I think she will remember the name and location 2maro, so I will try to post again.
Thanks Don...we will be looking at a fairly large quantity as we will have a veggie garden and all the wife's plans for flower gardens. The more I read about vermicomposting the more I think that is the best way to go for amending the soil, especially with the amount of backfill we have done to bring the lot up about what I feel is a "flood level". It is also important to me to have a very green lawn. Shawn
shawn... i don't know but green farm's a commercial operation so i'd assume alex is using the best for the his operation. we went to the ag dept when we were 1st looking for worms and got the run around until we found finally scored. they use worms to process their manure, which i thot was pretty neat, and they gave us a handful of worms to get started. then they told us about alex/green farms and said they got their worms from there. the worms are thin and red, not overly active, not what i'd call red wigglers. you can get a start from alex if interested. norm : ))~
Shawn 'n Norm, Guess what?? I should have known that Norm was telling you about the exact same place I was thinking off!! Norm's really into fruits / veggies / gardening....me? Not so much. LOL. Anyhow, just to clarify, Alex isn't always there as Norm said - so I also suggest you text him ahead of time. (I have the same phone # Norm gave you). The place is called "GreenFarms Systems"...but the SMALL sign we saw said "Geenbase Vermilcompost Bio-Organic Fertilizer" (Whew!!) I still have the brochure...he also has the nice black dirt, too. The worms I saw a couple of years ago reminded me of the big, fat, healthy nightcrawlers we dug up in Michigan for fish bait....really nice/fat. Not crumby ones that Norm saw....so perhaps there has been a change made? I don't know. Alex sells fertilizers, Dolomite, Agricultural Lime, and Rock Phosphate. He also sells at retail, per sack. Vermiculture is available at both Gloria Farms in Valencia and at the agricultural department of Valencia. About P150 per sack. I've tried using both and found I couldn't grow SQUAT in either variety. Couldn't even get weeds to grow in the stuff. Make my own compost now, without the worms. And it works very well.
