What's the difference I hear some say. Well, in this time frame of "Let's put others, World to Rights" people tend to forget, the world we actually live in. I recently lost my Japanese Spitz of 4 years due to a miscarriage. this, the vet told me, was probably caused by some infection, brought on, in his Opinion, by Ticks. Now for 75peso per 1ml dose You would think that Dog owners here, would try and do a little something for the Dogs they have, that, just wonder the streets, unfed, unwashed and generally, infecting everything they come onto or near enough to infect. I even saw dogs snatch food, from a child at the Sari Sari recently. "Pappy" did not get her April Dose as she was in Pup and we checked with the Vet to ask. He said it was a strong dose so not to give it. It might affect the milk. Like most medicinal doses for a particular issue, they may, have done more damage than good, so we left her out. Sad but damned if we do and damned if we don't. I guess I will be on a lost cause here on this issue but when I read all the stuff and Nonsense about Technology, Who is doing what to who, where, and here we are in 2014 and some (many in this Area) just can't look after themselves and the Animals they keep (Ha, unless it is a Fighting Cock that gets a Flea bath every other day) it makes my blood boil. I walk my dogs 3 times a day, on Leads and get comments, on how well they are behaved, why can't others just think about their dogs. (Children in some cases) For a little over 200 peso per year, per Dog, ticks can be controlled, 6 monthly skin treatment is all that is needed. Maybe I am just a Dog Lover, that can feel for the mangy things I see in the Street But I care enough, to worry about what effect, this can have on my dogs. Is it just me? No! I don't think so. I would sooner worry about this, than some of the stuff we are reading about. Lets all become Dog Lovers and not just, Dog owners. I know, they are kept, to do a Job for us but they are Near and Dear and deserve some TLC as well. Sorry, Rant over JP
It's not a rant Jack, more a genuine concern for the creatures around us. The more I deal with people, the more I realise how much more I prefer animals, for I have never found one that lied to me, cheated me or wanted to steal my money. The attitude to animals and their welfare in this country is atrocious to the point of being callous. All Creatures Great and Small means nothing here, which is quite hypocritical, given that this nation of so-called God fearing people should have a spiritual leader who chose the name of Francis, the patron saint of animals.
don't get me wrong, but for these dogs roaming the streets in such bad condition it would be best to shoot them humanely and then get rid of the breeders, then get rid of the owners lol, not humanely
One piece at a time, one neighbor at a time... one cat (dog) at a time Last evening I woke at 4 AM to Imp crawling up to my face to say "hello". I had been gone for four days, and as independent as he is, he has been friendly and affectionate since I returned home. Today I would have to admit I am much more concerned about Imp, or anyone else that is alive and close to me than, global warming (which I feel is more of a controversy than a fact). Which brings me to my focus which was part of Jack's post: "Maybe I am just a Dog Lover, that can feel for the mangy things I see in the Street But I care enough, to worry about what effect, this can have on my dogs. Is it just me? No! I don't think so. I would sooner worry about this, than some of the stuff we are reading about. Lets all become Dog Lovers and not just, Dog owners." Being a Christian there was always offers in our church to go to far off place to minister and help the poor. I could never understand why we could not minister and help the poor in our own neighborhood. Every neighborhood has poor, and certainly every neighborhood here has poor people looking for food and other necessities in life. I am saying we do not have to worry about the whole world all the time, as if everyone would just focus on their neighbor, or their neighbors' dog or cat, then the world would take care of many of it's own issues. I know for some this may be taking a small perspective, but all the little pieces of the world ad up to the whole world. It is easier to try to fix all the small piece one at a time than to be overwhelmed by some huge issue that may be just more just controversial words than real problems. Actions always wins out over arm chair discussions in my book, but those actions can be carried out close to home.
Are you talking about "**********"??? That's what I give my dogs nowaday's every month as dewormer/ tick repellent. Before I started to use this one of the dobermans got sick, lameness ect. The vet gave expensive medicines without result. So I gave him tetracycline bcs I thought it's tick related and oeps, he's nearly OK again and with a good dose of vitamines daily he's improving fast.
Odd you should say this Brian, I was under the impression that there was an ordinance passed by the mayor, for just this. Humanly, getting rid of the dogs in a really bad condition.[ I don't like to see any animals put down but sometimes, when there is nothing that can be done, so beit] (Then of course, maybe this is just another ordinance, that will never be enforced) The owners well, that, I will leave up to imagination, Usually a good Breeder will do their best to place Dogs in Good Homes. The main Problem is of course, the Puppy Machines, that are roaming the Streets. As Dave said, One thing and One day at a time, is about all, we can hope to achieve. JP
Like Humans, sometimes medicines for Animals, can be Hit & Miss Hi Mokum, For ticks and fleas they are on FLIP 1cc for the Pincher and 2 cc for the Labrador. they get 1 ml of Leptofirm for Worms and Vanguard +5 for distemper. Both Bi Monthly, I recently put them on CHUM Biscuit meal with Vitamins and Both are doing well, unfortunately I could not save the Spitz. JP
Terribly sorry for your lost, Mr. Peterson. I lost 3 kittens here on Philippines and know very well how does it feel - to miss a pet which passed away. Many times this subj of the way animals and pets are treated here was raised even here on DI forum. But I see some change for better. I got good news for you, gentlemen. Here on Panay island there is a group of volunteers, some kind of social organization. Which travels across Philippines trying to enlighten people about some particular things like: advantages of safe sex, necessity of washing hands before eating etc. One might be surorised but one of the members told me that often, especially if they go to uphigh barangays or places not easy to reach, adult people have no idea about such things. So one of their missions among others is to inform and truly enlighten people about how they should treat animals and pets. In many schools she said kids have absolutely no idea what do dogs and cats eat, even children from rich families are not aware that they can share some food with their "small brothers". I see this as a small drop of positive changes in a sea of indifference and ignorance. Regards Mary
Thanks Jack, your post has touched on something that has been on my mind, overriding most all else, in fact, for a few days now. It hurts me to see the way people treat their animals here, dogs especially. Tied to a three foot rope as far away from the house as possible, or in a very small cage in the backyard, forced to live their entire life in their own feces. Many Filipinos are shocked that our dogs are so well behaved, well at least one of them is. If asked, many here will tell you that a dog cannot be trained to behave acceptably, simple things such as “shut up”. In their case, they may be right, as it is my opinion that in order to train a dog, you must first be smarter than the dog! About 6 months ago our beloved Xena started losing weight. She was still active and appeared healthy otherwise at 8-9 years of age. Xena is a wonderful loving German Shepard/native mix. Xena for the most part ignores Rony, but does most anything I say to her. I have always talked to her as if she were human, and she talks back in terms of snorts, grunts, and “rowr rowrs”. She has actually become more human than dog. Xena has never been on a leash or tied up since she was about 3 months old, she has never needed to be. About three months ago we took her to a recommended vet in the area, when she was becoming noticeably weaker. They weighed her, and listened to our description of her symptoms and weight loss. They wormed her, although we assured them she did not have worms, and sold us more worm medication and vitamins. They ran no tests, and did no physical exam of her at all, other than the weight check. We left there feeling disappointed, as we had gotten no new information. Xena seemed to respond a little to the vitamins, and although she didn’t lose any more weight, neither did she gain any. Last week Xena seemed a little more lethargic than normal, and obviously tired much faster than normal. She has always been a very active dog, and loved her walks and rides in the truck and on the motorcycle. She could no longer jump into the truck or up onto the motorcycle. Since I knew something was seriously wrong, I took her to the other prominent vet in town. This vet was very professional, and asked all the right questions, gave her a good examination, and arrived at the conclusion that Xena has ehrlichiosis, a tick born disease that is very prevalent here. A blood test confirmed it. Xena’s blood count was VERY low, and she should have had a transfusion in order to have much chance of survival (P8000), which we simply could not afford at this point in time. He injected her with meds, and sold us meds and vitamins (P4000+). His professional fee was only P250. She has responded positively in only three days. She is alert and happy, but has absolutely no stamina as the disease attacks the bone marrow and stops the growth of blood cells. Her platelets and red blood cell count is at one third of normal levels. Ehrlichiosis is known as “Dog aids”, we knew it as canine hemorrhagic fever back home, it can lie dormant and undetected in a dog for years, and then kill them in just a few days with little warning. I am disturbed the first vet cost us so much time in dealing with this. It nearly cost us a wonderful animal. This post was written yesterday, and should have been the 60[SUP]th[/SUP] post, however I could not post yesterday (thanks Globe). Xena continues to improve, and watching her now it is hard to believe how close to death she was just a few days ago. My special thanks to Dr. Baro of Baro Veterinary Clinic for his professionalism and caring, at least now we know what we are fighting. Xena is a fighter, and well worth fighting for. Larry
Thanks JP. I'm sorry about your spits and know how it is. I lost a spits on rat poison. The vet put him away with a lethal injection, he died in my arms. I will look in to this "Flip, Leptofirm and Vanguard" too. I think a ones a month injection with ********** will do the trick but since I just started with that I'm not sure. What's for sure is that my wife takes much less ticks off the dogs nowaday's.
