I planted some seeds a few days ago (mentioned it on my house build thread) and already have some flowers and a few veggies coming up. I have no clue about flowers, but put 8 different types of seeds in. The veggies I will be able to identify once they start coming up (or at least when they get their true leaves). I've never seen such quick germination and am quite excited about it. Just thought I'd share. Shawn
A few interesting, well maybe not, bits of information about seeds: Seeds only germinate in the dark. Some seeds germinate faster than others. Radish seeds for instance germinate very fast. Okra is very slow mostly because of the hard shell. one way to speed up the germination for seeds like okra is to scratch the seeds with sand paper. Lay a piece of sandpaper on a table, place the seeds on the sheet and roll the seeds back and forth with another piece of sandpaper. Also soaking the seeds prior to planting will decrease germination time. Do not soak seeds more than 24 hours, usally 6 hours is enough time. Any one like fresh bean sprouts? Place mung beans in a gallon jar, just enough to cover the bottom of the jar, put a small amount of water in jar, slosh around a bit, pour out excess water, put lid, with holes in it, on jar, place in dark area. Repeat water daily and in about two weeks you will have a lot of fresh bean sprouts. I would recommend seeds from gardens rather than purchased seed as they are sometimes chemically treated with pesticides or insecticides. You can use other kinds of containers but I prefer glass. You can use flat trays but try to keep covered as you are trying to keep the moisture in the container. If the seeds dry out they might not sprout. You can sprout all kinds of seeds if you in to this sort of thing.
Most are coming up The majority of the seeds are coming up, all the veggie seeds I brought were from Afghanistan...Okra was the first ones. Hard to see from the pics but our garden will be going pretty soon. Shawn
