    Wonderful. Download a windows update, restart and......boot loop. Lovely. Luckily I have my trusty Linux laptop as a backup. If it weren't for the compatibility issues (I like to play games on PC and I have to use MS Office a lot) I would never use Windows again.

    Only one option left for my Windows PC......factory reset (if I'm lucky). Luckily I have access to the command prompt and have 5 TBs of hard drives laying around to back up all my crap.

    Want to give a special thanks to MS for their wonderful updates. (Which usually break more than they fix.)

    Wrye; this comes under the listing for Windows 8 even though it states it is for Windows 7. By default your PC should be backing up for Restore Points. Roll back to before the problem started by following the instructions set out on this link;

    Using Last Known Good Configuration - Windows Help

    *Just in case you are unable to access these are the Instructions;

    Follow these steps:

    Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer by clicking the Start button, clicking the arrow next to the Shut Down button, and then clicking Restart.
    Do one of the following:

    If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by shutting down and restarting your computer.

    If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.

    On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight "Last Known Good Configuration" (advanced), and then press Enter.

    If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using "Last Known Good Configuration", and then press Enter.

    Windows will then resume starting normally.

    I was able to get into the command prompt and manually back up my hard drive with the old school DOS commands. I searched all over the internet for a solution to my problem and the ONLY solution was to do a factory reset. No worries as I have learned to keep all important documents saved to my Box/Dropbox/MyCould accounts. (I'm about to go buy another 2TB hard drive since I have two of them already filled up.)

    Had a real similar thing just recently on windows 7 , would not start , after about 20 attempts , went into dos and fiddled with a few settings , it started once , backed everything up, and then it would not start again , it was not able to boot from anywhere , imo when it did start it just fluked itself past the problem , tapping f8 constantly on start up . It would always get to a certain point when loading all the windows 32 files and stop at that point , would then say file missing and hard disk error , replaced the hard disk , reloaded windows and no further probs.

    Another thing you can do which sometimes fixes problems is to insert the Windows Disc and run a Repair of Windows instead of reinstalling.

    I now keep all data on other Hard Drives, more important data on more than one, but as I discovered while I was there last Christmas that is not fail proof either, I had all of my pictures including everything for my kids backed up on 4x separate Hard drives, on my return, I found those with another 4x Hard drives stolen... Some days it just doesn't pay to leave home :/

    Brian good idea , but a lot of things come with it already installed , so if you have not created a back up disc , you're shagged !
    But I suppose in that instance you could download it with your licence # ?

    All my really important data is backed up to two different cloud websites and two different hard drives. If all of those were to fail at the same time.....well, I just wasn't meant to have that data.

    I tried everything (I even had a Windows repair disk made last month prior to it going into a boot loop). The only option that would work was the factory reset option. The problem I was experiencing had one, and only one, fix according to certified techs for Windows and Lenovo. Every other comment/video found on Youtube and Google searches said the same.

    Everything is good now. The only problem I had was that I was going to redownload all my software and games again....and the internet is extremely slow here. (one game took me 7 days of constant downloading to finish)

    Moral of the story: Windows sucks....just as it always has, and always will.

    And the worst part; it is the best/ user friendly/ compatible OS out there so it is a case of you must sleep with the Devil if you want all the Bells and Whistles...

    I downloaded Two Discs from online;
    Digiwiz MiniPE and Hiren's BootCD

    When one fails the other works *touch wood* for me, each loads into the Ram and is a mini OS in itself which allows you to access Hard Drives and Folders which you would not normally have access to when Windows has a glitch.

    You can then transfer Data to another Drive, as well each Disc comes loaded with Software to repair, partition, erase, you name it!

    As an example; Hiren's BootCD
    (Read what tools come with the Disc at the link below; You simply pop it into your DVD RW and reboot and allow it to load up nb; you may need to set your Burner as the first Boot device in Setup)
