I have a property off the sea with a bamboo cottage that extends over the sea. The floor right now is just bamboo strips which is old and breaking away... I want it to be stronger to hold people for family gatherings.. Should I replace the old bamboo with thicker bamboo strips? Or should I buy the "Marine" Thicker Plywood and what is the cost/where can I get that? The dimensions are 9feet wide by 14ft long.

The next project is covering the sides with roll down shades of some sort in case of a storm/rain. Right now it is all open with just a bamboo railing. My neighbor has bamboo strips strung on a pieces of nylon that rolls up and down but he said it was custom made and it looks pretty tacky. Anyone have any suggestions on a way to do something like this, where to buy, or how much it would cost to take strips, string them up and have them roll up/down. The dimensions are W9ft x Height8ft

    Thanks Guys

When you talk of bamboo, do you realize there are different strains of it? The good stuff will hold up for a couple/few years over the water but costs more and is harder to get. This is second hand info from a friend with a resort built over the water for years. He sends his workers 50 miles away to get the right kind of bamboo. Consult an expert for better info :-)

We have a guy who does some work for us now and then, he is pretty good with bamboo. He can get hold of butong bamboo which is the good stuff with thick walls, will last for yrs if treated correctly.
Pm if interested and I will pass contact details.

My wife's mom has a lot about 20 minutes away so we've just been cutting down 20ft bamboo trees and slicing them down into pieces we need haha  - I'm looking for an affordable option, it doesnt need to be resort style but i dont want it to break under my feet either. Us "big" foreiners need a little more support

What is the spacing on the floor joists? You really want a spacing where you are not "bouncing" when you walk on the floor. Not an expert on bamboo, but if it is treated and sealed it should last for a bit.

there are none, its like full bamboo posts and then strips of it cut lined up like 2mm apart from each other, it doesnt bounce at all its like walking on a regular floor but the cottage is going on 15+ years and some of the bamboo is rotted and cracks, if enough weight is on it there are certain spots where it could and will snap leaving a nice little gap where a foot could slide through causing a pretty bad injury.
Nothing catastrophic or I wouldnt have purchased the place lol but itd be nice not to have to warn people about where to step and what places to be careful of.

Sounds like you have an idea for flooring..how about those walls? Instead of roll ups why not vertically attached shutters..bamboo frames with woven nipa on them. Use nylon fishing line like I see everything else held together on boats and such and wind it at the top as a *hinge* of sorts..just push them out on sticks or pull them up with twine whatever..they will reach out and cause more shade to be caste and possibly at an angle you dont have to completely shut them down to protect from rain..

I would love to see some pictures from below the floor, it would offer some better clues to the existing situation...
