TL:DR - Insane Girl from Canada moves to Philippines due to naivete for love that doesn't work out, she meets people, and now she's doing ok. (for now)

So this will be a bit of a read....I don't really know why beyond the fact that I feel like writing a bit.
I'm also scared to write because I know at least one of you (won't say who) hates me for something stupid. I'll pussyfoot around it later.

    I am Jessica!
I am a 28 year old young lady hailing from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
I grew up in Halifax, and at the age of 18, I started my wild and crazy life adventures....
I've moved to Calgary three times, have also lived in Red Deer and Hinton.
Two summers ago, I hitch hiked across the country, which was an amazing time...I met a lot of really good folks, and had lots of awesome experiences.

In the last few years, I had struck up an online romance with a person I met through a mutual friend.
I had spoken with this guy for quite a few years previous and was a good friend. We stepped things up a notch and I decided I would save some money and move to the Philippines, where he and his mother had been living for five years.

After a few months, his mom basically paid for my plane ticket and had me on a plane in less than a week.
I appreciated it, but on another level I didn't like it...I wanted to work for a while, save up my own d*mn money and fly by my own steam....but again, I really appreciated that I would get here faster than I had originally thought.

It was my first time flying anywhere outside of Canada, and the whole trip was fantastic.
When I got to the Philippines, my very first thought was 'Thank god I wore a dress and not pants.'
    It was so hot!

We were blissful for the first three months.
Then I found out he was a MAJOR alcoholic. I mean like...drinking up to three seniors of tanduay a day, by himself....then hiding the bottles literally anywhere you could think of.
I tried to work with him on it...tried reasoning, ignoring, threatening, supporting, I tried doing nothing, I tried distancing myself, I tried anger and tears.......nothing worked.
So one night, after he punched me in the face and broke my tooth, I left.
I lived for a few days at a shelter, and then lived at the local police station in Valencia for a few months.

While I was there, I did what I do best...I talked to people, networked my bum off, and ended up with a few options.
(Here's the pussyfooting, for the curious folk.)
I was speaking with two different people, one around my age and one not so...simultaneously, I spoke with one group, who was willing to help me out, and the day after I agreed, was offered another opportunity.

I chose the second opportunity, due to the fact that they were offering me much more...not just by way of financial help, but also in terms of life experience.
The first choice was nice, and perfectly fine, except that I really felt like I was taking advantage of a situation and person that did not warrant taking advantage of.

I'll say straight out...I'm not going to befriend or help someone out because I feel like I'm going to get something good out of it down the road. That is not who I am, and I would much rather be in a situation and place that I can utilize my hard-earned skills, and possibly add to my proverbial tool belt. I do not do things for the advantage or advance of financial gain....I do things that foster creativity, and that exercise my intellect.
In my humble opinion, I chose the path that I felt more comfortable with.
According to some folks, I chose wrong....but hey. Opinions are like assholes, right?

Anyways...Now I am doing well, and my long-term plan is to stay in the Philippines for ten years, and then eventually get my citizenship. I've met a nice man....at first he grated on my nerves, and I thought of him as 'too nice' for me, but I've grown attached to him, and he's very sweet....who knows what the future holds.

Eventually I want to open a 'Cat Cafe' in the Sospeso style, but that won't happen for years, too poor for that now! haha

Anywhoo...I guess that's all the relevant stuff, unless you have any questions!

    -Jessica

Aha, a Canadian girl. My partner and I are in a great situation due to a Canadian girl. You may have read how the foreigner ends up paying the bills for the gf's family? Well in my case her older brother is partnered up with a Canadian girl so SHE is the one to work and support the family while I get a free ride (because she has way more money than me). My thanks to Canadian girls everywhere who step up to the plate and do their part. And best of luck to ya in your endeavors.

Thanks all...I'm actually stationed in Zamboanguita now, but close enough, and I visit Duma usually twice a month for movies and beers at Coco Amigos.

No, didn't get the tooth fixed, and I also have 4 wisdom teeth and a cavity that also need fixing lol, but 1. Scared of dentists 2. Don't know any safe dentists here and 3. Can't afford something like that right now.

If you were in or near Quezon City, I could give you the name of an excellent Dentist. She did 13 crowns for me for about 30,000 peso
In the States it would have cost me $600 per crown :D

    Welcome to DI!

As far as tooth concerns go - don't wait! If you do they will only get more painful and more expensive!

Extractions are cheap here and as low as 250p at the local hospital and 500p ("all in") or even less at any of the local dentists. Fillings usually range about 500p. Wait long enough though and you will need a more expensive root canal!

There are quite a few dentists in Duma and if you use the search function (above, upper right - see pic of it below) you will find out who likes which ones and why.

Don't be a chicken! Get is sorted out little by little if you are on a budget. Even a chipped tooth (if it is minor) can be repaired for 12-1500p and capped for 4-5000p. Quite a few dentists will give free estimates too!

That's all well and good news, but prices like that, it'd take me three months of savings just to be able to afford....I've had the wisdom teeth coming in now for about 12 years (so weird) and have only had the cavity for a little while.

Weirdly, when I first got to the Philippines (and also in Canada), I wasn't big on brushing with toothpaste every day (ew, I know, whatever....In Canada, I was using toothytabs, a natural toothpaste alternative from Lush cosmetics) and I never had the cavity.
I get to the resort, and now I brush every single day, toothpaste and everything, and my tooth has deteriorated in three months.
( Proof toothpaste is evil? Maybe lol )

I'll look into dentists, but honestly...like everything else I do in life...I'll probably wait until the very last moment to fix it.....worrying about visa renewal's good enough for me for now!
    :p

Well I can't say it's because of fluoride in drinking water, because I have no substaniation. I can say that my Mom at 82 has never had a cavity, and does brush with tooth paste daily. Coincidence?
