Extraordinary events take place all the time, they always have, even before we had means to write them down and archive them. Each era sees itself in the midst of extraordinary times. I browse the forum mostly for content about Dumaguete and Expat life & issues. I don't mind seeing political content, but when things get dogmatic/polemical it's just a turn off....I just browse some other thread. Segregating political threads so that they don't show up on the "what's new" frontpage might be a practical idea (Wrye's idea?), I can attest that it is sometimes cumbersome to wade through a few pages of post abstracts not at all related to expat life, Philippines or Dumaguete , but that's just me. Someone else might want to segregate all of the Bureau of Immigration threads for their own reason, maybe they are tired of seeing the "what's new" board full of immigration stuff... (see, it's a bit of a slippery slope).
As somebody pointed out before, we are presumed to be Adults. Surely that's enough requirement to look at the title of the thread, then decide if you wish to participate. Hence no need to have passwords.. With regards to the function of the Forum, purely based on the subject of Dumaguete and surrounding areas. Apart from daily happenings, I would assume most things have already been covered. Therefore I feel it is well balanced as it is.
Participation Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and my Dad brought us kids up to believe that the best form of conversation is a "d*mn good argument" (suitably lubricated). I think the confrontational style of some posts is perhaps due to the fact that we can hide behind pseudonyms. So - more get-togethers might be a partial solution. I think they're a great idea, but I've missed them so far due to work.
Re-entry premature? It would seem that if you thought the forum members were really grown up you will let us make up our own minds as opposed to defining what is essential for each of us to know. It seems like a lot of members have started to post again with this thread, personally I am one of those people who started to post again, feeling that there was a level of freedom not to be controlled. With out a doubt I am one of the member who prefers the freedom of my own decisions, and not facing threads and post that seem to be trying to indoctrinated my thinking repeatedly. If the forum is going to go back to the last few months type of post which tell me what is essential for my life based on someone else opinion then I will take a quiet exit again. As an Adult I think I can decide what is essential for my my life and what just indoctrination. I have tried to avoid the political posting but when it is dropped in with so many threads, it is easy to just exit the forum as I have done for a short period of time. Essential I found my life more peaceful without the forum drama. Maybe my re-entry to the forum was premature. O-|
I mistakeningly confused a Troll with a Gnome, now I understand the distinction. Troll (Internet) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As always, Wrye got it probably right, I personaly really can not imagine that people would not like to read about what is really reshaping the World, sooner or later it will affect everybody...
Current Rule Breaking! Apart from personal attacks, there are 3 main rules on DI ( Unless they have been changed) 1. We will not discuss Political postings ( if this is what you want, join a Political Party. 2. You want to talk Sex? go to a Brothel (if you can find one in Dumaguete) 3. Want to talk Religion, go to Church ( After all it is Sunday!) These 3 rules, are common in any Forum, Club or gatherings of people, who care and just want to live a life, without Crap. So here we have, some members, that break, those rules Daily, yet nothing is done, to curb them. What, should we Glean, from this ? I believe, someone out there, does Not Care Anymore ( the lunatics have/ will soon, take over the Asylum. Do we want this to happen? JP:(
