Well the past year has gone by pretty fast and I will be in Dumaguete next week... WOW !.. i am wondering what kinds of seafood do you most often get there... I am originally from Maryland, USA and Blue Crabs were a delicacy for us.. one very large company gets all of their crab meat from the Philippines but I do not know if this is anywhere near Duma.. are there Crabs there that people eat..? If so what are they like..? also how is the fresh fish availability.... what kinds of fish ..? also very curious about vegetables and fruits that are most popular for Expats from USA..? I have seen some videos of the market and there are many things i do not recognize..? Sorry for the grocery list...any info appreciated..

Good evening/morning depending on your time zone rob. I am/was a fellow Baltimoron, now living in FLA/Quezon City PI. My wife who still maintains a home and several businesses in Quezon City has extensive family ties to the Dumaguete area and we go there as often as we can. I am in no way as well versed in the ins and outs as most people in this forum are. I do as you obviously do Love Seafood. And you could if you wish eat nothing but seafood. The quality,varitey/price is mind boggeling so I will leave that to others to guide you.
    Question:
    1. Are you going visit for vacation?
2.How long do you plan on staying?

I ask because it will make a difference in your seafood purchase. There are many good/decent places to eat in a Resto or if in a position to prepare or have prepared for you the food, wet markets where seafood is abundant. I'll paste a link to a good source for info on Resto, as its contributed to people who have in fact patronized these establishments. Keep in mind that many do come N go, so I suggest getting involved with the poster to see if these still are in business. Go with the latest post for what is probably still open.

In Maryland were we both hail from the minimum crab size to keep is 5" point to point. Albeit you would hope they are larger often times the smaller crab contains much more crab meat, than a larger size. None of the crabs prepared by aking Asawa's Tita were less than that size and masarap. What do you base your judement on of small? Rob was not asking about Dungeness crab or King Crab.

I eat fish, mostly sashimi style, 5-6 times a week. Wife buys it fresh (tuna and tangigue) from the Bacong fish stands. On rare occasions she will splurge and buy scrimp from Robinson's Market. She also gets Lapu Lapu (grouper) and tuna belly from the big Dumaguete fish market. I was never a fish eater but had to lay off the red meat for health reasons.

Pat..if asawa gets tuna from the roadside why is she running up to RobMkt to pay premium?..Im guessing because the tuna are less than pan size?

My wife is from here and we found dealers for shrimp and crab in Bacolod one hell of a lot quicker than here so far..nadda..Where are the closest farms?..err ponds

Surely you've heard of the biotch that trademarked "Hon", a sh*t storm ensued and she relinquished the trademark. And yes I have eaten and I did wash my hands in the sink:D
